I moved in December 2005 and still like it here. The management staff and neighborhood leaves a lot to be desired, but the overall experience is good. I was very lucky and was able to secure a remodeled corner unit (large 1 bedroom) before SF rents skyrocketed last year.

The Positives:

I like layout & finishes of my apartment, amazing view, I have never heard any noise from my neighbors, most of the other residents I have met are nice/normal, and the location is incredibly convenient.

The Negatives:

The windows are terrible for blocking noise & wind, the street noise can be bad (think sirens from the nearby fire station); there are a lot of homeless on the streets outside, the management staff has some serious issues that Archstone Corporate needs to address.

Because of rent control my rent is more than reasonable, especially for downtown thus allowing me to save $$ to buy a place in the city down the road. It's a far from perfect building (probably the ugliest in the city) and the maintenance crew could definitely do a better job, but it definitely feels like a community here with a good mix of long term and new residents, demographics and pets. If you are looking for high end apartment or a suburban oasis in the city this is not the place for you; but if you want a killer view, nice apartment, and relatively safe place to experience living in a city (warts and all) give it a try.

This person is a lot more satisfied than I am. Never heard noise from tenants. Lucky there. How about the hardwood floors that sound like a tapdance contest above you all hours of the night. Management that makes no attempt to communicate. Buyer beware!

Regarding the noise levels- I'm in a corner unit and I think the person above me must have carpeting. From talking to other tenants I know a lot of people do have noise issues depending on their location and their neighbors. I got very lucky with both. As for the management, I cannot find any way to defend their ineffective and unprofessional behavior. Hopefully Archstone (or is it Tishman now?) will be smart enough to correct that problem before they build the new tower across the lobby. It's really a poor reflection on their company...

I was surprised by this review. With the great turnover in the building, which is encouraged by the management, you are almost bound to get a noisy neighbor. Management is turning it into a party building for students and the like. I used to live there and noticed the change. I feel very sorry for those old timers who still live there and suffer through it.
