A good fit for some; air quality concerns

I lived in the low-rise for 14 months in 2004/05. The management was very nice and professional. Two big pluses are: the location (that part of SoMa is sterile compared to areas north and south, and Caltrain is next door) and the surprising quietness (if your windows face the inside yard). The big minus for me was the air quality. I like to have my window open, but the intersection of 4th and King has a number of idling motors at any time and the exhaust gets blown into the inner yard, along with Caltrain diesel fumes. I think it is a micro issue just for that particular intersection, not for all of SoMa. And, it seemed seasonal. Less of it in the winter and early spring, gets much worse in the summer with airflow change. I got priced out of the whole area in 2005; seems that there is nothing much under $2.2k in the cleaner part of SoMa left for a 1-br.
