Bayside is worth a look if you can take advantage of the conveniences (downtown shuttle, walking to Pac Bell, underground parking, pool/gym). If not, Id recommend looking elsewhere. South Beach has its amenities (nice weather, location) but is not for everyone. For one thing, it is in a high crime area right next to a halfway house for criminals (Delancey Street) and the Bay Bridge which collects a lot of homeless people. I have had 2 car break-ins in 2 years, one in the parking garage itself. Management waited to install cameras in the garage after approximately 40 cars were hit in the span of 2 weeks. No, I am not joking--check the police records. Bayside has a couple security guys roaming around, but they probably would not even qualify for airport security (how do you miss 40 simultaneous car alarms'). Oh, but I should say security is really good at kicking people out of the jacuzzi after 11PM.
The management is generally pretty lame. Rent hikes were 5-7 TIMES city inflation rates in 1999 and 2000.. One HUGE negative was managements choice to go with Castle Cable, the WORST possible cable provider. They have frequent outages and outrageous service. Even worse, you cant get HBO without buying a silly digital cable package which involves an extra box, phone wiring, a horrendous non-intuitive user interface and extra remote. Oh and you might as well scrap your Tivo. It wont work with Castle Cable. So if you value your television, go somewhere else. I have noticed a couple people able to mount satellite dishes on their balconies, but very few. The other issue is maintenance. The washer/dryers are frequently down. Also, I once did not get any response to 2 messages I left about my disposal. Hit or miss for sure.
Also, before you get too carried away about the pools, be sure to come by on a sunny saturday. Most of the people laying out are less than attractive. But thats my opinion, see for yourself.
