Moving to California and trying to find my first apartment seemed pretty daunting until I found Bayside Village. It's an oasis in a busy city and reminds me of a complex youd be more likely to find in the suburbs. We have a great 2 bed/2 bath corner apartment with 2 balconies and tons of space. Cheaper cuz we face a street and are on the first floor, so thats an added bonus. Working in the financial district, this place is perfect. Its a 25 min walk to work with NO hills, but I just hop on the shuttle every morning (it promptly departs every 20 min) and I get dropped off on Market St within 10 min. I use the 2 gyms regularly... the weight room with my personal trainer, the cardio room on my own, and I attend the free yoga classes on Sundays (you have to pay during the week). Huge savings when you dont have to pay for a gym membership. Even better are the pools and hot tubs! There are 3 of each, and since South Beach is the sunniest neighborhood in the city, we were laying out by the pool until November!!! This friday my company is renting out an empty room with kitchen/tables/tv/couches, etc for a small gathering (up to 50 people), which is a really cheap and great option for parties! Lots of young people around here, 20 somethings and young professionals, but many families as well. We had a big Halloween party and even though we told our nearby neighbors we still had security knocking a few times... seems reasonable though :) Parking is kind of a pain ($200/month for a covered spot in the garage... or hunt for street parking nearby - can get a permit for this for only $100/year I think, but all of your visitors will have trouble finding anything without a 2 hour limit... and during baseball season its hell). Proximity to the Bay Bridge (80), 280, and 101 are all within a few minutes - great when driving, TERRIBLE when trying to get home in a cab during rush hour because you get stuck in tons of bridge traffic. Lockout policy is pretty fair, but I do wish the Office was open for better hours (9-7 now) and you pay $20 if you get locked out when they aren't there... but when you work late you really wish they were open earlier in the morning for when you need to go in. Although this neighborhood used to be full of homeless people, its certainly on the upswing and filling up with swanky bars, restaurants, and condos all around - definitely the up and coming place to be. Although its a $15 cab ride if you want to go out in the Marina or Mission, all of the other good things totally outweigh that cost. Our 6 month lease just ran out, but the manager told me there is absolutely no price savings or incentive to sign a 1 year lease instead of a 6 month lease, because you automatically switch to Month-to-Month with no rate change... he said they usually evaluate your rent after a year, and sometimes they even decrease it depending on how the market is doing! So far I love Bayside Village and have no plans to move out any time soon!!!
