I lived here through Law school (Hastings) and hence needed to save money, which was my only reason to stay here...

The good thing is that there is a 24-hour security guy at the front desk - the bad thing is that these guys don't seem to speak any English and some of them do not appear all that bright, also, they are meant to "filter" out the Tenderloin undesirables from entering the building, but many times I've been stuck in an elevator with a guy who just breezed past security smelling of liquor and weed.

There are only two elevators for 16 floors which have 14 apartments on each floor! This means you have a daily wait for the elevator to get up and down from your apartment - especially since there are a lot of fat, lazy kids who will wait ten minutes for the elevator to go up one floor.

The walls are solid concrete, which means that you can't hear your neighbors. You also cannot nail anything on to the wall, as I said, it's CONCRETE!

The building is pretty much entirely comprised of studios and one bedrooms only, and is about 95% Mexican/Latino and is basically lower-income. You have a lot of the stereotypical situations - i.e. - five guys sharing a one-bedroom, or a guy and his wife and his three kids (about a year apart each) all living in a single apartment - this makes the building a lot more congested, noisy, and crowded than it already is. You also have a lot of young guys who are into that whole latino gang thing hanging out in the building and harrassing women.

This sounds like a racist diatribe, but I am only relating what I see, and I do not for a moment assume that this is representative of an entire population or nationality.

The neighborhood is God-awful. It is the tenderloin, which means there are junkies and homeless people all around, and public urination, defacation, drug use and all that good stuff at all times - and it permanently smells rotten. For a while it seemed like it was getting gentrified, but now, even with a Police station just a block away there's drugs, prostitution, gang crap, all over the place. It is reasonably safe only because it is the Tenderloin and hence it is well-lit at all times and there are always people out and about, but that affords only minimal assurance.

They do however spray every month for pests, and there is a semi-secure underground garage. The building is relatively clean in comparison to other buildings in the Tenderloin, but that isn't saying much since most of the others are run-down residency hotels. There are card-operated washers and dryers on each floor, but with fourteen apartments, and about three kids in each apartment, you'd better get in line to get the washing done.

The only good thing about this complex is the manager, Rebecca Harris, who is responsive, attentive, helpful, and goes out of her way for her "good" tenants, she is the only thing that made my stay acceptable.

Given the current economic climate, with rents going down everywhere, you could get a small apartment for about the same cost on Nob Hill....avoid this place, it is depressing, seeing the human detritus daily will wear on you, and the "homies" don't make it any easier

I have lived @ Central Towers (Turk Street Building)going on ten years & all I can say is that this is the best run apartment complex. Rebecca Harris is a good apartment manager. She is a VERY good listener & acts fast that what is requested of her.I have never had any trouble. The repair staff is the best. I filled out a repair request & in twenty four hours the repair was done! The building itself is VERY clean, as are the common area between the Turk & Eddy building. the trash/laundry rooms do get a little dirty from time to time, but all you have to do is tell any of the security guards & it is cleaned up within the hour. As for the security staff---they are very, very good. They never let anyone up to the apartments that has not signed in but also must show photo ID too & they call the apartment to see if the guest is due. The neighborhood has been cleaned up quite a bit as well. the pimps & whores that used to sell their wears on the corner of Levenworth & Turk & Turk & Hyde street are gone. You never see the crack heads & junkies as well as the homeless people anymore. The SFPD does sweeps of the neighborhood from time to time. They round up the drug dealers & junkies & cart them off. I feel very safe, considering its the Tenderloin. The location is good for public transit, MUNI is located in Civic Center & a bus stops on the corner of Turk & Hyde street all the time. The building itself is VERY quiet, you almost get the feeling that everyone is dead it is so quiet. You do get the once in a blue moon kid running up & down the halls. Once in a great while the elevators break down but we as tenants deal with it as best we can & they are never down for more than a day or two. Over all you could pay ALOT MORE & GET EVEN LESS for the money
