Hip, over-hyped, homicide central

The lofts are quite hip, approx. 3 yrs. old & ultra-trendy. Think modern industrial with a hard-edged urban vibe, complemented by concrete, steel & stainless accents. Every unit has four enormous windows for plentiful sunlight. Not to mention W/D in unit. Dog-friendly. 24-hr.-ish security. Well-lit. Tenants are 20- & 30-something professionals, a mix of ---/straight (pre-breeders) singles & young couples.
Location is highly accessible. Its 3 blocks from Caltrain, 2 blocks from the 80E on-ramp, 0 blocks to the 280S on-ramp. The back streets allow you to avoid the sometimes hellish ballpark & Bay Bridge traffic. Easy walk to Union Square, Yerba Buena Gardens, the Metreon, PacBell Park. SF Tennis Club is across the street. An even easier walk to the local homeless shelter, which many former tenants found convenient after the 3rd layoff made it impossible to afford the exhorbitant rents. Tons of homeless hang out around the block, but no panhandlers or crazies (so far). $200 for garage parking, but street parking is surprisingly available - a rare treat in the city.
The complex is over-hyped, though. Formerly catering to a live/work, trend-seeking dot-com crowd, management is reeling from the currently 40-60% vacancy rate. And after last weeks double homicide on the 3rd floor, I doubt tenants will be coming in droves. Even so, the landlord is embarrassingly unresponsive to current tenants. To put it mildly.
On the plus side, you can probably score a "deal". The few of us remaining tenants are counting the days until lease end. There are dozens of other loft & upscale apartment complexes with vacancies around the block.
Think twice before you sign. BUT - If you are lucky enough to be e-vited to a house party here, do NOT pass it up!
