I've lived in the live/work lofts for nearly two years now and when I first moved in it was tough. The Minna Street side at the beginnning was overrun by street monkeys (aka crackheads) etc..and sad dance freaks fighting with their boyfriends on their way to 1015 or the Cat Club.
Overall the street has improved with the "Beautification" plan of 6th street, the new SOMA Grand Lofts, the opening of Westfield and the new Federal Building on 7th. The neighborhood is finally thriving and crime has decreased-hence not that much craziness on the street. My car has never been broken into in the garage, and there is key card access EVERYWHERE. Yes, the garbage trucks come by at odd hours and rumble down Minna and if you are a light sleeper you'll get woken up. Yes, if you leave your stuff in the laundry room and don't watch it, it could be stolen-there were some thefts but the mgmt team responded by installing cameras in there. And who is stupid enough to leave their wash unattended'
The mgmt team also added security to run some of the vagrants off too. I'm a single girl and I feel pretty safe at my place. All the residents know not to let others in if they don't have key card access, but yes it happens. My loft has a security system and I think the others do too.
A new cafe is getting built on the corner of 6th and some other trendy shops have opened up. Okay, progress is slow...but compared to anything else in the city, I have more square footage and a better apt than most.
It's worth it to live here because I have a slammin' loft, 835 square feet, bi-level, T1 connection, gym, new laundry rooms, constant survellience etc..I have compared ALL the major apartment complexes in the Financial District, SOMA and other parts of the City and NOTHING compares to the advantages I get here. No one can say they are paying $1660 for an 835 sq ft loft-NO ONE. And I have a pet! I don't mind that the neighborhood is edgy and who the eff cares if there are working class people living in the neighborhood' I would rather be in this neighborhood with all the ethnicities, economic diversity and artist types then ever selling out to neighborhoods like the Marina.
If you have a soul, like an edgy neighborhood that is only getting better and all the amenities, two blocks away from the Westfield, XYZ, and Union Square, then try it here. Yes, there are Section 8 in the building but I've never had a problem-remember these peeps are trying to make a living too and mgmt just kicked out a whole mess of unsavoury people these past few months. There are pretty cool residents, lawyers, doctors, students, artists you name it. Oh yeah, the management staff has always been considerate to me and responsive and trust me, I'm a bee-yotch! And all the months I've been using the gym, not once has the equipment been broken! If only my butt would get smaller!

Thank god, I heard the truth before committing based on their false marketing. So any recommendations for a decent 1BR luxury apartment in Mi.Bay/SoBe area?
