i lived in the webster towers for 5 years.

1) very convenient location. however if you go south from the apartment you are in a fairly dangerous neighborhood. during my 5 year tenure i can remember 5 street murders within a 4 block radius. one murder in 2004 was in the parking lot within 100 yards of the front door of webster towers. there are an incredible amount of car break ins on the street.

north of the building, fillmore street is the very opposite of the south side of the apartment. pac heights and very high end shops line both sides of fillmore. a great neighborhood. we miss it a lot.

2) apartments are a little small but big enough. this is convenience living so you give a little to get other benefits like having safeway across the parking lot.

3) neighbors are mixed. lots of foreign students. some older folks who are generally very nice. no loud partying in my 5 years there.

4) noise - the parking lot is very loud. if you're on a lower floor and face the parking lot you will regret it. the worst are the two recycling trucks and the gangs of kids that hang out in the parking lot all night during the summer months.

the recycling center from the safeway parking lot comes about twice a month. the building recycling truck comes once a week, very early and the entire building can hear it. they don't use the back loading dock becuase they are extremely lazy. we complained about this repeatedely without any change.

5) security guards - some of the guards were very conscientious. nice and very concerned about the building resident's safety and well being. specifically the guard that works sunday mornings and afternoons.

my guests complained a lot about all the other guards. their major complaints were that they were treated like prison visitors stopping short of being frisked.

these guards are reputedely the lowest paid guards in san francisco and it shows.

6) overall i would recommend this building if:

a) it is short term
b) if you want to be in the middle of the city.
c) if you have a lot of visitors. parking is very convenient. you can park in the safeway parking lot without concern during the day except on saturdays and sundays and at 7am. thats when the safeway guys are out there towing cars. but if you keep it under 2 hours you have no worries whatsoever.

hope this review helps. sf is a great city and good housing is tough to find. like i mentioned above, there are gives and takes but as evidenced by my 5 years there, i would say the pluses outweighed the minuses.
