Not bad

Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2006

I lived here for one year.

Overall, its not bad, but it has its downsides:

Space:
1. No swimming pool, a tiny gym, and severe lack of parking space. Only one spot assigned for a one bedroom apartment. No guest parking at all. Additional spots are not available at all, even if you are willing to pay. Yes, there is a public parking deck right across the street. Its $50 a month to park there, and that too, only in the evenings. This is mainly because of the downtown location. A more suburban location would probably have solved all the above complaints.

Staff:
2. Management is decent, but not very active or very polite. Never rude, though. No complaints.

Repairs:
3. Ive had a handful of calls to maintainence in my one year. Maintainence was done slower than expected, but nothing serious. Repairman was courteous.

Noise:
4. Noise is an issue, but only the street noise from loud drunks some nights. Maybe we were just lucky to have quiet neighbours.

Neighbours:
5. Yes, there are students in the building, but have no complaints about them. They live quietly.

Construction:
6. The complex is fairly new and the materials used are of decent quality, unlike the cheap ugly cabinetry and doors you find in cheaper apartments.

Rent:
7. Yes, rent is slightly higher than in other places, but the location makes up for it. Our rent was increased by 19.5% when it came time to renew the lease.
We moved because we already had decided to move to a bigger place in the suburbs since my spouse also got a job.

Safety:
8. The place appeared safe to me. access cards and keys are required to get in to the building and parking lot. security men patrol the common areas at night.

Deposit return:
9. I don't know how much of my deposit I will get back. From what I hear, it is routine here in the bay area to get only half your deposit back. Out apartment does have some wear and tear on the carpet and walls due to routine living, not any accidents, but stories from other renters makes me suspect I will get very little, if any of my deposit back. Lets wait and see. Ive decided to write every little ding and scratch during the move-in inspection at my next apartment.
