The grounds are kept up nicely, noise from the neighbors is severely limited and the complex is extremely well lit at night (motion activated lights.) James was the big man on campus at the complex and was a pleasure to have in command at the office. He works hard and always smiles and calls you by your name. He's quick to get in contact with you to follow up on repairs.
The only problems we've had at the complex were loud neighbors. We had to call the police three times, twice for noise and once for a brawl in the parking lot where someone was threatening someone with "You wanna leave here alive'"
We moved in to 1930 Almaden Garden Apartments in the summer of 2007. Come December we received a letter stating that VPM Management Inc, a company located in Southern California will be taking over the management duties for the complex. One month later we received another letter stating that VPM Management has "...received financing under the Federal Tax Credit Program. This is great news. It means that we now will have the money to do some major improvements to the property."
"Great!" we thought as we read the new list of amenities.
But the paragraph below that ended our excitement by stating "With this new financing, we are required to rent apartments ONLY to households that fall within the following income ranges:
One Person-No more than $44,580 per year Two People-No more than $50,940 per year Three People-No more than $57,300 per year Four People-No more than $63,660 per year Five People-No more than $68,760 per year"
The letter then goes on to state that people who do not meet these requirements must move when their lease is up.
I haven't talked to many of my neighbors about this yet, but I'm willing to bet that most of the complex will be flushed out. James, the manager of the complex appears to have been demoted because he's now at a different desk. Also, James is the only member of the old staff who appears to have been kept on the current payroll.
VPM Management has been written up negatively in the San Francisco Chronicle for shady practices: http://quartz.he.net/beyondch/news/index.php'itemid=3450
It's really a shame because these apartments were a nice place to live. With the soon-to-be influx of low income tenants and VPM's overthrow of the current staff, I'm glad to be leaving.
