Robbed AS I WAS MOVING IN!!!

Yes, believe it! I was actually robbed while moving into the apartments this weekend. My backpack was stolen right out of my car while it was parked in the Leasing Office space and while myself and the movers were moving my stuff upstairs. I was shuttling some things from my car, and had been diligent about locking it every time, but it appears that I forgot to lock it ONE time and that was all it took to be burglarized. That means, there MUST be scum bags hanging around just laying in wait for the opportunity to present itself. I think I saw the person who might have done it - some guy was standing next to the stairwell smoking and kind of looking things over. I can't be sure it was him though.
YES, I am kicking myself for letting my guard down at all, but the point is that this Avalon absolutely has a crime problem if it happened to me that quickly. BE WARNED if you move here - watch your stuff VERY CAREFULLY while you're moving in. The guy got away with 3 laptops and a ton of other stuff plus some credit cards, my passport, checkbooks, etc. I was using my backpack as a convenient carry-all bag for misc stuff during the move and let my guard down only once with it. Coincidentally, that was enough! I have subsequently spent the remainder of my weekend canceling credit cards and trying to figure out how to ward off identity theft rather than unpacking.
Welcome to the neighborhood eh'''
We're contemplating giving notice within 30 days, but we'll see. I talked to the neighbors and according to them there has been a rise in crime here lately, especially in the garage.
I am marking a YES recommendation for now, because the office staff has been great with the move in experience and the apartment is pretty nice - a bit worn though, but still pretty nice. It would be a nice move in experience except for the theft. I know it's not Avalon's fault my stuff got stolen, although a few working cameras would be nice.

Why yes, of course, I am one of the thieves I refer to. You really must be out of your mind. A high crime neighborhood? Where is your information from? And if this was known to you ahead of time, why would you move here? If this neighborhood is so horrible, why do so many families live here? Why is Cahill Park rarely with a vacancy? Furthermore, Avalon does not charge a premium, and in fact, comparable complexes in the area are more expensive. I even renewed my lease with a rent reduction this year by nearly $200. Certainly you are angry that you are so stupid to leave valuables in your car, but to in any way insinuate this has anything to do with Avalon is completely unfair. And before you argue this, yes, by posting on this specific site, you are insinuating this has something to do with Avalon. There are cameras throughout the property. You would also like cameras in the retail parking lot and on the street? Why don't you ask the City for that, I'm sure they would be more than happy to oblige your totally reasonable request.
Let's see. Thieves being in the business of stealing and all are going to go somewhere people can afford a higher rent, have nicer cars, and have nicer things? Yes, of course they are, especially when people are so stupid to leave things in the car. Oh, and nice one thinking your movers are untrustworthy. They have insurance, after all, unless you did something illegal like pick guys up at OSH to help you move.
You. Are. An. Idiot.

Nothing like taking the thieves' side jackass! I agree with the poster. It's clear that he's just trying to warn other innocent folks of the crooks that are just waiting to pounce on unsuspecting victims and not blaming Avalon. Where else is he supposed to post these warnings? The Mercury News? What kind of society are we creating when we place blame on the victims for crimes like these? I'm sure this poor guy was just begging for someone to steal his stuff. As for movers and insurance - you must be a total retard. It's not like you get to do background checks on movers before they show up at your doorstep. And their insurance covers broken items, not theft that you could never prove anyway! Get real moron and join the good people of the world in creating a better society instead of siding with the crooks and their God-given right to steal from innocent unsuspecting people! Geesh!

Good post there Anonymous. getoveritpunk is a total dipsh*t. The next thing he's going to be telling us is that we can't own convertibles or soft-top Jeeps cause that's just inviting these bastards to cut open our roofs and steal from us! Where does it end? Residents of any apartment complex are paying good money for safety and security and that includes the parking lots. It's the responsibility of everyone to prevent theft on private property and that especially includes the landowner who is getting paid. And just for your information there mr. getoverit, the cameras in the parking garage are not currently working. Your dumb ass probably didn't know that. Residents, landowners, and law enforcement all need to work together to drive these scum bags out of our neighborhoods. You can't just blame the victims every time they slip up. If there's a problem with theft like there is at the Cahill, I don't care if it takes cameras and armed security guards posted around the complex to solve it. It needs to be solved - period! You are absolutely, without a doubt, a total and complete idiot!

1 month follow up. Ok, we decided to stay, and after 1 month of living at the Cahill, we are really enjoying living here. The neighborhood could still use some cleaning up, but this is not too bad for a downtown area, and from what I understand there is a city initiative for continued development. I've definitely seen a lot of good folks living here, but my warning still stands, as I've seen a lot of bums and other questionable folks hanging around the complex and out on The Alameda. I've also heard about a lot more thefts in the area. A lot of residents that I spoke with said that it just started getting bad a few years ago. Also, as I predicted a month ago, my rating still stands too. Big pluses here are the great office staff, great maintenance staff, Hannah's coffee shop, the Blue Fin restaurant and their great bartenders, and its proximity to downtown and the freeways. Parking isn't too bad either. The only real negative is that you need to be ultra paranoid about letting your guard down. Thanks to the other 2 posters for getting my back :) I'll certainly have my eyes open going forward. Maybe I can help catch one of these scumbag thieves that the punk-ass is so fond of protecting.
