I actually have lived in worse buildings, in the Tenderloin of San Francisco. Even then, the staff was good.

This place is the epitome of cheap.

The contractors complain about losing money over the place. You can hear your neighbors through the walls, and their smoke drifts between the units via the bathroom ventilation system.

We had to threaten to break the lease just to get moved from underneath a party apartment to a much quieter place. This was after sending multiple letters to the management asking them to please enforce their rules regarding noise, and after spending several worknights up past 4am because of the neighbors? refusal to listen to security. At least now the neighbor is willing to turn down her very loud TV, even if the guy in the next building blares his stereo at 8am -- we?ve given up asking him to turn it down.

Parking is a joke. The so-called gate is worthless: area residents will block the gate open with a napkin, or wait for someone with a clicker to open it for them. The management has started to issue stickers, but refuses to compell the residents to retrieve them, and therefore doesn?t bother to enforce the parking.

Construction is questionable. The showers have voids under them, which has led to cracks which they just epoxy a bandaid over. We spent over a month between no-shows and non-fixes to our master bath, and they refused to compensate us for the loss of use of the shower, which problem we noted upon move-in. The new apartment had the same exact problem, and broke in the same way. We?re just not bothering this time.

Heating is actually free in the winter. The floors feel like concrete for a reason. The hot water pipes also run through the concrete. Don?t bother turning on a heater, but expect ridiculously warm living conditions the moment summer starts showing up. The A/C doesn?t affect much more than the living room, even with a bunch of fans to redirect the airflow.

Scrub your stove when you move in. The painters don?t bother to cover anything, even if they?re painting where you live. We found lots of paint on the burners and carpet. The counter surfaces stain easily. Don?t leave a common plastic grocery bag on the counter overnight or you?ll be scrubbing it before lunch.

Be very careful about which building. This was the complex that had the multiple-alarm fire in June 2003. They?re repairing the place, but given the lack of quality in the regular work, I wouldn?t step foot in that building (J, I think .. next to the office, and to the right as you face the office entrance).

The management is all talk until you threaten them in the wallet. I recommend not even giving them access.
