Cheap is cheap

Future posters: Please list what building you are living in/posting about. The 1/2 buildings seem to be nicer than the 3/4 buildings. I am posting about 3/4.

When we first moved in last year we thought we found a great deal. The price was around $1000 for a 1 bedroom apartment with an open floor plan (but small bedroom). The lack of cabinets was disapointing but you can get storage totes or cabinets cheaply enough. The landscaping is astroturf and there isn't much storage space in the garage. Anybody complaining about stuff like this needs a good kick to the head as they saw it before moving signing the lease and moving in. The residents were students and working class and kept to themselves. Walking distance to The Alameda, downtown San Jose, and the Arena.

One year later; cars are broken into (per the warnings from management), elevators are vandalized, building is dirty (I have seen a cleaning person exactly once). The type of neighbors has realy changed. It usually smells like pot in the hallways of building 3 & 4. The people you see walking around look stoned. You never see the "normal" people; probably because they are scared and are locked up in their apartments. The office employees are rude but they do help you. The manager is great and very nice; maybe too nice to replace the office girls with good help. I have never seen a security person.

There are some positive changes. They finaly fixed the security code issue: they changed the door and garage code from 1234. You can no longer get into the building with a code, you need a key. Everyone has their own garage code. Once they handed out parking stickers and started putting notices on cars the parking lot virtually emptied out.

If you need a cheap place to live this is it. It doesn't feel safe, but I haven't heard of anybody being attacked. All of the crimes I am aware of are property and drug crimes. I have seen the police often enough that I keep on seeing the same cops. The fact that I always see them in groups of 3 or more tells me that they are scared of comming to this apartment complex. I am looking for a better place, but it is hard to beat the rent here. I guess you get what you pay for. If I could afford a "luxury" apartment I might be there instead.
