Okay but needs improvement for the price

I have lived at this apartment community for over a year now. When I first signed my lease, the complex was owned by Avalon but sold to Fairfield a few months later.

When we moved in, the apartment was clean, repainted and newly carpeted but somewhat lacking. The paint job was extremely rushed: paint on the baseboards was a common sight. While clean, the cabinets in the kitchen and bathrooms were older, the doors scuffed.

The washer and dryer, the main reason we chose the apartment, were older models. The washer works fine but we have had continual problems with the older dryer and have consistently had to dry our loads two or three times. This has led to tremendous gas bills. Management has done nothing about this despite multiple complaints.

The heater and air conditioner in our apartment are antiquated. The heating vents have no knobs so it is guess work to figure out which way to push the lever for heat.

There have been tremendous improvements in the grounds since we've moved in and Fairfield has taken over. The exteriors have been repainted, the parking lot repaved and it seems that they are in the process of fixing the neglected concrete walkways.

The cosmetic changes are nice but the service from the staff can be spotty at times. On a recent Sunday afternoon, I had to contact the office. I tried hourly from 11 to 4PM (well within their posted business hours) and there was no one available by phone or on site. I have had similar difficulties reaching a person at the office at other times of the week. When I do get lucky and get in touch with a person, however, the service is courteous.

Overall, we've had an "okay" experience at this complex. I'm sure there are worse places to live but given the condition of my apartment and the spotty service, I will not be renewing my lease.
