On the positive side, Miraido Village is located in Japan Town near some nice local restaurants and businesses and is close to the major freeways. The neighborhood is relatively safe, and there is a farmer's market on Jackson Street right next to the apartments every Sunday morning, which usually makes very little noise. There is a VTA light rail station within walking distance about 5 blocks away.
There are some disadvantages to the area, however. First, the lack of a grocery store. There are specialized Japanese, Mexican, and Vietnamese markets and soon to be a Trader Joe's, but no regular full-size supermarkets nearby. City and traffic noise is light to moderate, and freight trains pass by usually once or twice a day between 8 a.m. and the afternoon.
The apartments have high ceilings, light carpet, and vinyl floors in the kitchen, bathroom and laundry room. There are fiberglass tub/shower units with glass doors, and the countertops are plastic. Countertop space is limited in both the kitchen and the bathroom. The appliances are electric, and the kitchen hood vents right back into the unit. The washing machine is rough on clothes, and the dryer doesn't have a low heat setting. Noise between units is much worse from above than from the sides, and sound insulation between floors is poor.
Fortunately, most of the people living in the apartments are quiet, and noise complaints are addressed by the staff. There are currently some, but not many, kids. Loud parties are not a problem here because the staff actually enforces the rules.
There is a small workout room, a hot tub, and a pool, which is currently heated but unfortunately wasn't for several months earlier this year for various reasons. The pool area is superior to other apartment pools we saw in San Jose since it is gated and not visible out everyone's window.
Overall Miraido Village isn't perfect but it's probably about the best San Jose has to offer in apartments.

I absolutely agree with the sound problem from units above. It is almost unbearable. But knowing this, you'd think the tenants would take more care in how they move around, and they don't. This noise is very BAD!

I currently reside on an upper unit, and yes, I've received noise complaints from the lower unit tennants. From my perspective, it seems that the noise issue seems to be more an issue with building construction than with tennant noise.
It seems that any type of normal walking can be heard as loud stomping from the lower units. If you are one to be sensative to general noise, I believe that the management would be more than happy to accomidate an inter-apartment move.
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a soultion to this problem. Just pray that the apartment above you doesen't have kids! =)
