Yo!

THERE IS A MOUSE IN MY APT!!!!!

I have been here for just over two months.
Overall I loved it...

DESPITE the fact that when the parking garage alarm goes off 4, 5, 6 times in a row, no security comes.

DESPITE the fact that it's overpriced and undermaintained.

DESPITE our disgusting carpet, on which stains from previous tenants appeared within a week of our arrival (before our furniture even made it here).

DESPITE a tiny washer and dryer and showers that are rigged to never go above lukewarm.

BUT tonight I have discovered a mouse in my apartment.

I have lived in Africa and Europe, as well as the Southeast and Midwest of this country, and I have NEVER had to deal with rodents in my home. I have lived in poor, dirty parts of town and good parts of town. This is THE NICEST apartment community that I have ever lived in, by far. Until now.

We pay well over $2,000 dollars a month for a small 2 bedroom apartment and we have a mouse.

Oh, and the elevators seem to break on a regular basis. My boyfriend was stuck inside our elevator for an hour before help finally arrived, and that was in the middle of the day on a weekday.

Like I said, despite all this, we were okay with this place. Having a mouse inside our above-ground-level apartment has crossed all the boundaries.

FORGOT TO MENTION THAT ALL THE SAFETY CERTIFICATES IN THE ELEVATORS I'VE BEEN IN ARE LONG-EXPIRED, AS IN NOVEMBER OF LAST YEAR EXPIRED. Someone went as far as to circle the date in permanent marker on the plastic casing before we moved in, and it's still there. That's really classing up the joint.

There have been notices from the leasing office on storage units that they were conducting an audit of the storage units. The flyers said something to the effect of "must respond by July 30 or your unit will be rented out" - it is September and these flyers are still up, making the halls look awful. Plus, many neighbors keep trash bags outside their door despite the trash chute being 20 or so feet away.

As an added welcome bonus, we *think* the leasing office gives out information of new tenants to solicitors - get ready to answer the door to very persistent salesperson after very persistent salesperson when you move in (they leave your established neighbors alone). How many times do I need to tell these people I don't want the paper'!

People who don't like or are afraid of dogs, beware. In the evenings, the field out front becomes a dog park of sorts (although with no fence and a busy road nearby). The dogs are off leash and often out of control. Also, the poop bags are most often out in all of the several dispensers throughout the community, so watch where you step.

On a final note, be advised that the entire North Park Community (including the Pines, Oaks, Laurels, Redwoods etc)is under contract with AT&T/DirecTV, so your Internet and cable options are very limited. The DirecTV packages and promotions available to North Park residents ARE NOT the same as those commercially available to the rest of the public. They are much more expensive. There is a monthly maintenance fee for EACH receiver, including the first! Plus, even though we're in the heart of Silicon Valley, High Defenition programming is not available here through DirecTV. The only option to bypass DirecTV and their ridiculous charges is to get your own dish through Dish Network, but that's only if your balcony has a clear line of sight to the southern sky. Walk through the neighborhood and you will see a Dish Network satellite dish on most Southern-facing balconies, to prove this point.

Overall, beautiful looking community, there is no doubt. I am not overlooking the benefits of living here, and I love the landscaping. I am just suggesting that you be aware that there are very serious issues with this community - from serious pest infestation to building management.

Bottom line, WATCH OUT.
