I'm not making it up, check out the news story below from San Jose Mercury News. So glad I moved out of that hole. I hated it there, and the leasing office people are jerks.

As if having a brothel in your building with pimps and johns next door to your family was not enough, what others have said is also true. To sum up:
-Elevators break constantly, one caused a fire last April
-We had two mice on our 2nd floor apartment
-People litter everywhere
-Thin walls
-You HAVE to use AT&T for Internet and cable, unless you will have a southern facing balcony with a clear view and don't mind a dish. AT&T's rates are about 50% higher than normal, with shoddy service, because they know you are stuck with them.
-Leasing office manager treats you like dirt once you sign the lease.

I'm quoting the article in full below:

Milpitas resident Hsiu Hwa Chou, 41, were arrested for allegedly... (San Jose Police Department) 12 SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT (Publ. 08/19/08 )
An article about brothels turning up in residential areas misidentified an apartment complex in San Jose. The correct name is the Pines at North Park.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kate Schlei and Angela Tisch moved to the Pines at North Park because of the park-like setting and the feeling of safety at the upscale San Jose apartment complex.

Learning a brothel was in their complex was a huge shock.

"It's kind of scary," Schlei said as she walked her English cocker spaniel, Maddie.

But come to think of it, she said, she had seen a lot more men coming and going at all hours, when she mainly used to see women and children.

"They must really do well," Tisch said of the brothel at 80 Descanso Drive. "This place is like a resort." A one-bedroom costs $1,800 a month.

The brothel was one of two San Jose police closed down last week, bringing to 10 the number shut down in the past year, usually after neighbors complain.

Prostitution might be the world's oldest profession, but modern-day brothels are the last thing residents want in their neighborhoods.

"They're being detected quicker and in larger numbers because of the public's awareness and willingness to call us," said San Jose police Sgt. Greg Albin. "They come to light because of complaints."

The two brothels busted in San Jose last week had an added surprise: An assistant principal at San Francisco's Galileo High School had signed the leases.

According to police, Gerald Courtney, 57, the school official, and Hsiu Hwa Chou, 41, were arrested for running brothels at 1550 Technology Drive and 80 Descanso Drive. The arrests came after search warrants were served at the homes of the suspects in Milpitas and San Francisco.

Courtney will be arraigned Thursday on four counts of pimping and prostitution. Chou, who is scheduled to enter a plea on the same day, faces the same charges.

Albin declined to discuss the case but said police and the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office have been aggressively pursuing complaints about prostitution in neighborhoods.

The special investigations officer said he wouldn't stand for it "if it was in my neighborhood and my children were playing around that atmosphere."

What has fueled the opening of more neighborhood brothels is the easy availability of free advertising on the Internet, he said.

"It has brought prostitution to a new level," he said. "It allows for anyone interested in advertising sex for money to log on, make up an ad and submit it for free."

But contrary to the lavish bars and comfy couches pictured at the Nevada brothels on television, these neighborhood brothels are bare-bones inside, "with little to no furniture and make-shift beds on the floor."

Albin said people behind the brothels are careful not to draw unnecessary attention to themselves, which is why they're set up in nice neighborhoods. But the heavy foot traffic of customers often gives them away, leading to neighborhood complaints.

Both operators and customers cross all social, ethnic and racial lines, Albin said.

How much customers spend can range from "$40 to infinity," he said. "It depends on what they're offering and what the customers are willing to pay."

Roxanne Panicacci, a resident of the Pines, said she was surprised the neighborhood brothels were detected at all.

"This is where companies put their new employees and people are always going in and out," she said. "A lot of families here are always walking around but if you close your eyes, you feel like you're at the Ritz Carlton."

Anyone who suspects there is a brothel operating in their neighborhood may call 311 or crime prevention at (408) 277-4133 to file a complaint.

Actually, the saddest part is that those people were the best neighbors in the place. Even the article above says that these people do not draw unnecessary attention to themselves. I wish the rest of the people here were so considerate.
