I lived in the Redwoods for 2 months with a corporate housing and I have recently moved to my permanent apartment. Before renting my current apartment, I saw lots of apartment complexes around San Jose and Santa Clara area and I also used this website. Since the first time I found this site, I wanted to write a review about the Redwoods, because I am very surprised to see that Redwoods rating is as low as 6. I feel that this complex deserves a much higher rating than it has.
The Redwoods is one of the five apartment complex which form one big complex. The whole complex is very new and as far as I understand, there is also ongoing construction in some parts. Apartment buildings are located to form one big "U" and inside the "U" there is Moitozo Park, which looks as if it belongs to the complex. As another reviewer said, the roads between the apartments and around the Park are lighted. But unlike that resident, I don't think that's a bad thing. On the contrary, I think this park and the lighting add a great value to the apartment complex. You can walk around the park at 10 pm on your own without any fear.
There are small pools inside the individual apartment complexes and there is also one big pool in the main building and it's probably the biggest pool in this area. But note that due to the huge size of this mega-complex, it is possible that the pool is so over crowded in summer.
In the complex, there are some dance, yoga, pilates etc. classes. I don't know if the other apartment complexes that also offer this kind of activities really has running classes but the Redwoods has. My wife has attended some of them, and I also saw some of the classes while I was working out in the gym.
On the downside, rental rates in Redwoods are among the highest in the area. You can find two bedroom apartments for the same rent that you'll pay for a one bedroom in the Redwoods -or the other complexes in the mega-complex-. But honestly, I couldn't find any apartments that offer the same amenities and atmosphere for lower rent.
Even if you don't taken the rent into account, there are still two issues to consider. First, floor plans especially one bedrooms, like the one where I lived, are small compared to other apartment complexes and as far as I know, there isn't any extra storage. This may not be a big issue if you plan to lease at least 2br, but otherwise, you may experience some problems with finding a place to your stuff and keeping your apartment tidy.
The other issue is the size of the apartment buildings themselves. They are so big that instead of merely going up a few stairs to enter your apartment, you may have to use an elevator then walk some distance in aisles, pass some of your neighbors' doors. I know most people don't care about this, but the others may feel like they are living in a big hotel and not like it.
Other things, like noisy neighbors or having a good light depend on which unit exactly you live. I don't think that this complex has special problem with noise isolation. If you live in an apartment the only thing you can do is to expect to have silent neighbors. And, if light is really important to you, you may be better off looking for a south facing apartment.
In conclusion, I didn't experience any problems during my stay and I liked to be there. I recommend this place if you can afford the rent especially because of its atmosphere. I hope my review helps to whom looking for his/her new apartment.
