Valley West was our first home together after getting married. Hubby worked just down the street at a local elementary school, and one of the things that we really loved about this place was their teacher's special! For teachers who work in the same district, they offer a discount on the security deposit. I know, it doesn't save us money, but it was a thoughtful touch.
I remember walking into the Valley West apartment complex and being blown away by how beautiful the place looked. In East San Jose, I don't see enough flowers and trees around, and Valley West really stood out for me that way. The rent was cheap and the building plans were very spacious. I love the staff there, and they always knew us by name. I'll have to say that some staff members were better than others, and I learned very quickly who worked at what time so I didn't have to deal with certain staff. They weren't rude...some of them were just a little clueless.
We loved being so close to both 101 and 280 which made getting to places very easy though get ready for some congestion during rush hour or when there is an event at the fairgrounds!
However, no place is perfect and Valley West had its share of bad points. The insulation is horrible in the upstairs (vaulted ceiling) units. It got unbearably hot when the sun was out and unbearably cold when the sun was gone. We had to keep the heater and a/c running throughout most of the year which added to our bill. There was also a hole under the a/c unit which didn't help matters at all. In the middle of our stay there, management changed the rules about not having coal and smoke BBQs there and BOY, were we happy about that. Prior to that change in the rule, we had to tape up the a/c unit so our apartment did not turn into a smoke-infested death trap when our downstairs neighbor lit up his grill.
I didn't like how we're not allowed to hang our own curtains (unless if you do it in such a way so that it's not visible on the outside), and the driveways have a lot of pot holes in it. One of the pipes on top of our car kept leaking too. I think the security guards that were posted towards the end of our stay don't do much....but at least management tried to do something after a bunch of cars got stolen from our lot. Also, I think it's odd that a gated community has a big hole in the middle of the gate as well...
Other than that, we were very happy at Valley West and would recommend the place to our friends. We hardly had any problems and when we did, they were addressed quickly and fairly. We also had two cats there as well who also loved the apartment. When we moved out, we got most of our security deposit back.
