A quick summary of the pros and cons of Archstone Sausalito:
PROS - Convenient location - Generally decent apartment condition - Excellent view (depending on which apartment you move into)
CONS - Poor management (fail to follow up on tenant issues, management is *constantly* changing on a monthly basis, management is not particularly personable) and a little over-priced considering the service (management and maintenance) provided. For example, for 6 weeks (near the end of 2004), there was no garbage service at Archstone Sausalito when there were issues with the compactor (or something like that), and yet tenants still had to pay for the garbage service, even though it was not provided. To give another example, after notifying Archstone about issues concerning a bad cable wire in the unit shortly after moving in, it took them a long time (several months) before they actually did anything about it. By then, I must have followed up a dozen times about the issue, with several different people, because of the constant change of staff (and I pretty much had to explain the whole issue all over again each time - clearly, they don't keep a written record of tenant complaints) - Pet owners don't clean up after their dogs - 2 washing and 2 drying machines for each building, which causes problems since most tenants prefer washing two loads at a time, which forces others to wait for their turn - Since the buildings are old and the walls are paper-thin, you can easily hear noises from other people's apartments (TV, music, voices, etc.) - Parking is a pain for people with two cars. If you leave one of your cars in a visitor's spot for more than 72 hours, sometimes you get a notice from management telling you to move it or they will tow the car away. I don't know if they have actually towed a resident's car away, but they should really have a system to the identify cars of the residents (a simple sticker would work)
Overall, I had high expectations before moving in to Archstone Sausalito, and I have to say that I was disappointed. The management is super friendly when you're signing the lease, then after that, they kind of don't care anymore. And it is annoying how the management staff changes every month (makes me question how professional the staff is). I strongly recommend looking at other apartment complexes before deciding on this Archstone.
