I want out of my lease!!

I just moved into an upstairs 1 bedroom apartment in early August. I got suckered into the 1-year lease for the cheap rent -- $615.

I should have known you get what you pay for!

I moved in to find damp carpets. They say the carpets were cleaned the day before I moved in, but I find it peculiar my feet turn black when I walk barefoot. Nevermind the fact that the seams in the carpet are coming apart in the living room, and the carpet is low-pile like the kind you might find in a conference room -- not a residential setting. It certainly isn't the kind of carpet on which you would want to lounge and watch TV.

The cabinets in the kitchen are permanently sticky no matter how much you try to clean them. The finish is dark and thick. One of the drawers doesn't slide.

The light in the hood over the stove shorts out. You have to tap it sometimes to keep it on.

The light fixture in the dining room didn't work the day I moved in. It's this cheesy plastic pendent -- not a ceiling fan like any modern-day complex.

My biggest complaint is the roach I saw crawling accross my kitchen counter last night. I have NEVER had a roach problem in the past. I keep my dishes out of the sink, my trash goes out before it gets skanky, my food is stored properly etc. This stray roach is totally unacceptable, and as everyone knows, roaches don't live alone.

I was attracted to the complex by the unique architecture. The floor plan is small but efficient. The grounds have a lot of trees. The office staff is basically friendly. There seems to be adequate parking although none are reserved and very few are covered.

I knew the complex was older and accepted the wall unit a/c and heater. I took that as a trade-off for the cheaper rent.

Unfortunately though, the apartments seem to be poorly maintained and clad in shoddy finishes. I am extremely disappointed and can't wait to move out. It will be a very long year... if I last that long.

I do NOT recommend this complex for anything long term.
