Poor building construction, noisy, shady tenants

Just like the prior review, I've lived through it all myself at the Verona. Poor construction, cigarette smell coming through the ventilation system; a handful of nice neighbors, but most of the tenants are careless and dirty. Dog poop and urination in the hallways; loud, noisy neighbors with constant partying at any given hour. No one seems to stay long enough to make a difference. It's a shame as the building itself is beautiful on the inside and the outside.

You're absolutely correct in everything you said, and the problems are 1) we go through too many resident managers and no one seems to care about the building, the tenants or handling complaints, and 2) the rents are so insanely high that people use this as temp housing as they search for a more affordable place. We have, yet again, a new resident manager, and he seems to be quality- and detailed-oriented, as things things have improved quickly in just a short time. Once again, though, with rents this high and still increasing, I don't plan to stay much longer. $2,500-$3,200 for these units just isn't worth it. The high asking price is probably why some apartments have been sitting vacant since May, and I believe there are at least nine vacancies now. What will end up happening is, the owner will be so desperate to rent them out that he'll end up renting to anyone with a heartbeat, which will likely result in even seedier people living here. Looks like a disaster in the making if things continue. They should reduce the rent a bit to at least retain a few of the good tenants. BTW, with regard to the smoking thing. I've had both pot smokers and cigarette smokers beneath me, but never had a problem with their smoke entering my ventilation system. Perhaps it's coming from your fireplace. If you lived beneath or around the tenants who lived on the 4th floor near the elevator - the place right to the left of the trash chute - they were chimneys who used to litter the place with their butts and also smoked in the elevator. Anyway, they've recently moved out and their place stinks, but their intense smoke could've made its way up the fireplace flue into your apartment. Even having an ajar window could've affected your place. That's fairly common. By my account, in the last six months we've had eight vacancies of bad tenants - a good thing - who used to litter, vandalize, allow their dog to pee/poop in the hallways or were unruly, etc, and we've had five vacancies with good people who respected the building and the other tenants. It's hard to make other people care and call this a home when management has been so lax in its duties. I hope the current positive changes are sustainable and not just short-term, one-time acts to make the place look good to prospective tenants.

Thank you for your comments. Please note that I completely agree with everything you've written. Sad, but true. Beautiful building in such bad shape. When I applied to rent there, management had high standards and requirements for qualification. As time passed and vacancies increased, all sorts of questionable people started popping up who did not care at all - you would see non-residents entering the building using the building code - why on the earth would they have that privilege? It was thanks to the non-caring residents. Unfortunately it is a transient place and no one is expected to stay for an extended period of time. Long time/good tenants moved out for the very same reason. As for the smoking, I could smell the pot as well a few times, even at 4 a.m. in the morning.... I saw dog poop near the elevator (I actually stepped into it), and it dried there, because 1 week later it was still there. For the insane rent amount LJ is charging, that was not acceptable. I also remember 2 car break-ins while there, so ultimately it was not the safest place either. There are drug dealers in the building, staking out in the corridor on a "watch-out". While a pretty building with nice inside touches, it is not the best place to be in.
