Eager to move out

I completely agree with the previous reviews regarding Caltrain. Although we live on the opposite side of the complex, our apartment shakes every time a train passes. Although I was able to get used to the shaking, the horns blowing late at night was something I could never sleep through. The wrought iron fence between the complex and Caltrain was a poor substitute for a sound wall.
When we viewed the property in the middle of the day, we did not experience the train problem. The leasing agent assured us that it was very quiet, that parking was very ample, and that each unit had central air conditioning. While attempting to move in, we realized that the agent had lied to us and were told that she was no longer employed with the company. After extensive efforts on our part, we were finally able to contact a manager and negotiate some concessions. Guest parking is so sparse that residents with more than one car must come home early to obtain a space, or pay for gated parking. Our guests almost always have to park in the office center next door. Even the un-gated handicapped spots are always taken; often by residents without a placard. Unfortunately, the gate's been broken at least 5 times since we moved in last year. At times, it's remained in the open position for over 3 days!
Unfortunately, the ceiling fan above our bed was not sufficient for cooling our bedroom. After purchasing a portable A/C unit, we realized that this would not work for us because it required us to keep the sliding glass door ajar. The train noise in the middle of the night was too much to bear.
Water pressure is horrible for people with long hair, even after investing in a showerhead to increase the pressure. The cheap toilets also clog easily. We also had an issue with hearing our neighbor's alarm going off for an hour each morning around 5:30am. I think he was gone for a week and forgot to shut off his alarm.
We enjoyed the new apartment with the nice cabinets, high ceilings, and elevators. The common areas were always clean. And I am pleased that there were never any pest problems. However, when paint was dripped on the cement, it was blasted off and left a long permanent trail. It used to be a struggle to have maintenance return calls, but that has improved considerably. The leasing agents are friendly, but I was surprised that management couldn't offer a competitive rate for our lease renewal. Despite always having available units, they aren't willing to reduce their prices at all to meet other comparable properties.
If you are able to sleep through the nightly disturbances and don't mind the overpriced rates, the new appliances and friendly staff may be for you.
