WARNING -- Major Crime here.

Years at this apartment: 2002 - 2004
The tenants, for the most part seem to be fresh off the boat or otherwise and not only are rude but for some reason many of them don't know how to clean themselves and stink.
The notion of security is a joke at this place. I've had more than $13,000 worth of losses from vandalism and crime. In fact, This is not uncommon. Basically if you have a nice car, this is definitely not the place to park it. Many cars have been stolen right out of the 'secured' gated garages.
Most recently I've had my convertible top sliced open and headlights stolen (yes, you read correctly, they stole my headlights!). I've spoken with many residents during my internment at ASV and crime/theft seems to be a long running thread.
Management, in response to the incessant crime wave that plagues this community refuses to add cameras to the garages or hire guards. Basically they flat DONT CARE about you as a tenant. There are signs of improvement on that front, but it's all a facade and the 'new' management (they change management about once every year or so from what I can tell) still maintains their anti-tenant stance when it comes to the MANY problems making this place unlivable.
On a more domestic front. The elevators all smell constantly. Although the smells vary from day to day, there is clearly something rotting at the bottom of these elevator shafts. I imagine some former tenant/assault victim is rotting away down there.
Although the standard fixtures and appliances are all relatively good modern units, the apartments are generally smaller than average from what I can tell. My 3rd floor 2x2 is a great apartment, but I had to make one of the bedrooms into a living room and turn the living room into my office/work space. Dining rooms typically hold a small 4 or 6 chair table and chairs, but that's with people virtually sitting on top of each other.
Noise. No matter where you live in this complex, you will have to deal with some noise. The majority of the units have double pane'd glass, but this means that you live with AC on ALL the time, so if you have issues with AC or simply want to save a few dollars on electricity think again. The units that don't face 101 directly are reasonably quiet, but you still get large amounts of noise from the freeway as well as trucks coming down lakeside dr to go to the hotel or nursing home down the street. There seems to be an unusually large number of tour busses coming down this street as well. Regardless, this place is definitely noisy.
Packages seem to always end up at the office regardless of whether you are in the apartment at the time of delivery or not. I find this very annoying personally, and frankly the less I have to deal with the inept, incompetent staff the better.
The rent prices are definitely way beyond the facilities that you are getting. $1700 a month for a 2x2 with probably less square footage than a 1x1 at most other properties plus the fact that you don't get a private garage and the fact that this place feels more like a prison than a home. This is definitely looking like section 8 or possibly full on low-income house (The Projects) once the gloss wears off.
If you are seriously considering ASV, consider the following:
* Nice cars are verbotten. There are many nice cars here, but there is rampant vandalism and theft as a result. Thieves know they are there, so they try here first before elsewhere. Add to this that the garages are nicely lit (most of the time) so they can do their job in good lighting and with more or less no one around to disturb them.
* Inept and incompetent apartment management. For the most part they are simply ignorant and just don't seem to consider tenant suggestions or even demands.
* Overpriced, and you are dealing with a corporate entity that's publicly traded, so your little and loud complaints will be more or less ignored in order to maximize profits.
* No community. This place seems to be a stopping off point for folks moving from abroad to work in the valley. These people are usually nice, but depending on their country of origin most of them are rude and smell bad (I really CANT explain why this is so).
* Have I mentioned the massive amount of crime already' Seriously, your storage room will even be broken into (mine has...).
* It's big! We are talking about 710 apartments, so this place is massive.
* Nothing is conveinent to the complex's location. Well, that's not entirely true. Fry's is just down the street, but there are NO grocery stores for miles around and basically this area of Sunnyvale is primarily industrial/high tech office buildings.
