My husband and I moved in to a junior one bedroom here a year and a half ago. He is a graduate student at Stanford, so our housing was subsidized. Therefore I cannot really comment on the value for the rent, except to say that it's not even worth the smaller rent we're paying.
First I'll try and find some pros:
1.Large balcony
2.close to groceries
3.small but adequate gym and pool facilities
4.pool tables
5.occasional community events
Next, the cons (long list here...)
1. NO storage. After a year and a half of parking our bikes and rubbermaid storage containders on our balcony (haven't found bike racks near our building yet, and there is no other storage in the apt) we got a letter the other day asking us to remove them because they were not 'aesthetically pleasing' and they wanted to 'keep the building looking nice from the outside'. We're not moving them.
2. Speaking of 'aesthetically pleasing exterior', another reason we will not remove our bikes is because there are numerous abandoned cars in the parking lot that have been there since we moved in (Jan 2001). We have complained numerous times to the management to have them removed (one is next to our assigned spot and is parked crooked, so I cannot fit the larger of our cars), but nothing has been done. I feel this is a much larger problem than balconies.
3. Very low quality kitchen fixtures. The drawers jam, and one cupboard will only open 6 inches because it bumps into the over head light.
4. No ventilation. After running a hot shower for more than a minute, the entire apartment becomes damp and foggy, even if the windows are open. This is leading to mold around all of the windows and a large mildew build up in the bathroom (regardless of countless cleanings).
5. The community is largely Indian, and many apartments have large families in a small space, including lots of children. Expect to see a lot of children running around the parking lot - even at night.
6. Paper thin walls. When we first moved in we thought we had a loud and inconsiderate neighbor. It turns out his music was usually at a quiet to normal volume.
I could go on, but those are my major gripes. At least I learned what to look out for in my search for a new place.
