I wanted to let anyone interested know that the management team at this building is very professional and courteous. My fiancee and I have had some problems since moving into our unit a few months ago, and they have been very quick and helpful in resolving problems. The property is somewhat older and they are currently renovating units and improving the common areas, so naturally rents are going to rise. The other people on here clearly don't understand real estate economics, but the bottom line is that YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! Yes rents have apparently gone up, but they are making sincere efforts to improve quality of life at the same time. This is not a rent-controlled property, so if you want something cheap, move to Riverside or Bakersfield!
Sincerely,
A happy resident

MANY of my neighbors and I that have lived here for years will disagree with most of what you have said, but you are new to the complex, so I can???t really take what you said so seriously, as you have not had the chance to experience our same issues.
Our apartment has already been renovated, and they decide to hike the rent up again because they added a few more flower beds and lounge chairs to outside, it does not justify a $500 rent increase, over a few years???. What happens when the real estate market is back to normal? You will be paying more for your rent than you will for a mortgage on a local decent size house.
I agree that the staff tries to be helpful, and for the most part the office staff is very nice. We as tenant???s cannot be pissed that they work for a corporate establishment that could care less about old residents, and more about profit.
I???m glad your new lease is off to a good start, but don't be surprised with your humungous rate hike next year, and the year after... by then I'm sure you'll be residing in Bakersfield yourself!
And as for, "you get what you pay for", you REALLY get cheap parts and fixtures that will surly malfunction as you live there. Please be sure to post your experience with Archstone AFTER you have been a long term tenant.

I have nothing but good things to say about Archstone so far. After leasing a house for over two years where the rent went up more than what I was making each month, Archstone is a welcomed change of pace. I am fully aware that there will be increases, but I am so happy living in a community where you are treated so well.

First of all, let me clarify something in my earlier post from 7/23. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about Riverside or Bakersfield. I have friends who live in both places, and there are buildings there as nice (and nicer) than Archstone TO Crest. However, the market rents in those areas are considerably less than Ventura County, so if you're looking for a better price, you're better off checking those places out.
Also, what do you expect from a company who owns and maintains real estate? They don't exist to do you any favors. Just like any other "corporate establishment," they exist to make money. Of course, I believe in customer service, and by your own admission, the service here is more than acceptable. Market rents are another matter entirely, and if you shop around to other buildings in the area, you'll probably agree that this building is still below the average in terms of price.
One last thing, you mentioned that once the real estate market is back to normal, rent will cost more than the mortgage on a "local decent sized house." I agree, which is why I am buying just such a home at the end of my lease here! Since it sounds like you've possibly been through this cycle before, shouldn't you do the same? Or are you going to continue to complain about corporations stealing all your money?
