Here is a copy of what I posted at complaints.com.
I would like to report a complaint against:
Commons Apartment
1300 Burton Dr
Vacaville, CA 95687

On April 29th, we dropped off our $1095 rent check in the "Rent Box" provided by the apartment complex. On Monday May 7th we received a notice that we were late on our rent. The notice claimed we needed to pay the rent and the $145 late fee or leave the premises within three days. We immediately spoke with the management and explained we had dropped it off. Their argument is that they never received the check and that we can't prove that we dropped it off. Just like they can't prove they dropped off the 'notice', we can't prove we dropped off the check. After explaining we've always paid our rent on time and never had a problem, we asked them to waive the late fee. They would not. I would like to now advise everyone to not use their system of using the "Rent Box" as they will not stand by their own policy.
Infact I would not rent from them at all. We have had the following maintenance problems.
1. After move in, it took them 2.5 months to put a screen on our window. This is after nurmorous calls.
2. The washer flooded the laundry room.
3. The new washer smelt of mold.
4. The toilet stopped flushing correctly.
5. The shelf in the pantry broke. It can't hold a bag of rice.
6. The floppy key they gave us upon move in, didn't work and took them two tries to fix it.

We have only lived there for 10 months. In my opinion this is a lot of calls to the front office regarding problems within their apartment complex. We highly discourage anyone from renting there. The service has been completely unacceptable. When we approached the management regarding the rent problem, they were rude and hostile. They did not accept any responsibility and refused to believe it was possible they lost the check. The service we received for the screen was absolutely unacceptable. I spoke with 3 people in an attempt to get it fixed and left two messages. Finally after a rude message, I received the screen. I don't feel I should have to stoop to their rude manners to get what I feel we deserve.

Based on inadequate service, insufficiencies and rude management, the Commons Apartment is not a place to rent from.

DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE OVERALL APPEARANCE OF THE COMPLEX!

Make sure you put a stop payment on the other check. They could still find it and cash it.

"When we approached the management regarding the rent problem, they were rude and hostile" ... Rude and hostile ... I don't think so buddy! The manager is a tiny sweet lady, and the asst. manager is one of the nicest people I have met. Also, any responsible person would turn in their rent check in person and ask for a receipt. Why would you even risk using a drop box for your rent??

I think so, buddy. The Manager is tiny, but far from sweet. The Assistant Manager was wonderful and the current residents will no doubt miss him. I lived there for a year - rude, distant, cold and disinterested - yes. When you spend nearly $1600 a month and cannot sleep at night because of rude, loud, drug smoking neighbors violating the noise ordinace, when you have to call the Police 3 times to get them to quiet down, when they (Management) allow a chicken (yes a chicken) to live in an apartment for weeks, when your car is burglarized (no lights in the car port for more than a week)until several residents complain, when your apartment gets flooded and you are unable to use your second bedroom for nearly a week afater a maintenance person attempts to "fix a running toilet", when your screen door arrives just a few months before you move out, the list is endless. I cannot recommend this location to anyone, and have in fact notifed the people at Travis AFB to encourage our armed forces members to look elsewhere. Also, why does the complex HAVE a drop box unless they intend that it be used by those who work hours that don't allow them to get to the office before it closes? by the way, don't bother to have your carpet cleaned before you move out, they will charge you anyway. Signed, a responsible "former resident".

Ha! A tiny sweet lady??? YEAH RIGHT! She is so far from SWEET it's not even funny! They obviously can't afford to hire a professional here that's why they have such an ----- for a manager! She is probably much cheaper than a professional who knows that they are doing. By the way... yes you are correct, the other young lady who works in the office (Casey) is wonderful.

Janine couldn't be sweet even if she ate an entire jar of honey. I'm not even sure if she is legitimately sane. How could someone in their right mind be so mean? At first I was mad at her but, now seeing HOW MANY people feel the same way I do, I almost feel . . oh wait she charged me $3000 in bull**** fees- Yup, I still hate her.
