We live on the first floor of the complex, which is absurdly loud and ugly. If the people make any movement upstairs, even just usual walking, we can hear the floor's support beams creaking unsteadily.
When we moved in, the carpet was a mess (which they didn't clean, they just redyed an ugly brown), there were stab marks on the door, our oven was so old it needed to be lit with a match, there's a hole in the ceiling which spiders crawl out of in alarming numbers, one of the light fixtures didn't work at all (the bulb was broken with exposed filaments, dangerous), and our oven/heater leaked gas for four months before it was fixed. Four months! Even when I made them aware of the problem, which could kill us, they refused to fix it for an extended period of time, then claimed there was no leak. When we made them come in with a gas monitor, there was in fact a leak. Gee, surprise. We still have a large industrial fan that they won't take away from when the carpet was dyed.
The whole apartment, except for one bedroom, is on a single circuit breaker. More than five light bulbs and the entire circuit blows. You can't have two lights on and use the microwave. Also, the heater roars at a ridiculously loud volume, and the temperature isn't easily regulated by the thermos. Half the time you can't get hot water for a shower, and there is mold growing throughout the apartment, especially in the bathroom. The sinks drain terribly, even though we've used draino and checked the pipes for clogs.
The staff is friendly, but generally unhelpful, and extreme nagging must be utilized to make anything get repaired or addressed. There are safety issues as well. Aside from the gas leak, the gutters leak directly onto the sidewalk, which is really dangerous in the winter. The fire department is down here quite a lot checking out gas leaks, so it isn't just us.
The parking lot is too small, and while there are ample spaces, it's really difficult to get in and out of half of them without impacting another car. The lot is just too skinny.
And oh yeah...there's lead paint.
