Pleasantville ain't so pleasant

Meadow Creek looked nice enough, although my boyfriend and I were a little shocked to find out how expensive the units are given their distance from Boulder proper. We decided to apply for an apartment, mostly because they were having a "special" in which application fees were only $13 (they are normally outrageous), the deposit was only $99, and the first month's rent was $13.
In short, the process was ridiculous. The first time we had an "appointment", no one even bothered to show up and meet us. The second time, Judi was generally rude and irritated with us, for no apparent reason. After filling out all of our information, we received a phone call saying that our back ground checks had not cleared and Meadow Creek was unable to rent to us. We are currently awaiting the results of said check, but I am totally baffled. We have rented four apartments and held three separate jobs which required back ground checks, all of which came up clean. Furthermore, neither one of us is a criminal, and we are both working on graduate degrees.
On top of everything else, they incorrectly filled out the check refunding our deposit, making it impossible for me to cash. The utter lack of common sense and decency of behalf of the Meadow Creek staff has shed light on just why they have to give their apartments away with these 'specials'- it's a wonder anyone lives there at all.
