Horrible staff, deceptive practices

For full disclosure, I haven't lived on property, their practices during application definitely destroyed any chance of my family living there.

We had researched this property online and became interested with value and ammenities. For $750 there was a ground level 3bd 2bath with washer and dryer. We called and drove down, everything seemed wonderful. We were greeted by Ann, who runs the office and the property manager, Sharon. Both seemed friendly and compassionate, explained processes to us and gave us all the required paperwork we needed. We drove back with the paperwork and was told that we didn't have all they needed. We asked if we could fax the paperwork in which was declined as was email. (30 minute drive and gas prices are crazy.)

Sharon showed us two apartments. One wasn't finished and Sharon advised us that it'd be cleaned and maintained before move in date. The first one which was ready to go had a broken dishwasher and splotches on the carpet. No big deal, when she opened the space where the hot water heater was, there were bug corpses and stains on the floor. That's when we asked to see the one where we were applying for. It was worse, the family before had recently vacated but Sharon promised it'd be cleaned and everything fixed. She did explain that the countertops wouldn't be replaced for being chipped and scratched in several places and to just write it on the move-in list so we wouldn't be charged for it when we moved out. Things they wouldn't replace before we moved in would be documented so they'd know it wasn't our fault but appliances would be in good working order.

I did notice that while the fronts of the buildings were well maintained, the stairs on the back of the buildings were not. The paint was practically nonexistent and many steps were in bad repair. Ants were numerous outside the building but I didn't notice any inside. Parking was also of concern, no spots were available at the building we were interested in at 2:30PM on the numerous visits we made. Although the parking at the leasing office usually had 2-4 vacant spots.

They stated that the apartments were going fast and by the time we got back, it could be gone. Using a tactic to scare us into putting the deposit down to hold the apartment. We complied, we made a $225 money order out and they would hold the apartment. We came back a third time with the necessary paperwork, this time being greeted by the management company representative (Sharon's boss, Peggy). Ann told us that the credit check takes 15 minutes but since Peggy was in the office and they were having lunch (we got delayed for a 20 minute lunch break) that it would be done within two hours. So we agreed, made copies and went about our way. We never got a return call that night and called back the next day. At that point we were told that it wouldn't be done until the following day.

Again, no call that day so we called back and spoke to Sharon. Sharon was extremely hostile on the phone, stated that it'd be done whenever she got to it, two days or so. We explained that we had been waiting and the deposit was already put forth. She was even more hostile and sarcastic. We asked her to pick up the deposit and cancel the application. If the change happens then, I couldn't imagine when we lived there during a maintenence request. We drove back to the apartment (5 trips so far) and asked Sharon for the deposit back. We were very civil but obviously disappointed from the broken promises. Sharon physically WAVED the deposit check in the air and said she could keep it if she wanted to. We asked for the management company's phone number and her manager's name. She absolutely refused, stating she didn't have to provide that information and that she didn't have to give back the deposit. It was by far the worst experience I've ever had with any sort of 'professional'. Again, we asked for the management company and she did resort to giving us a number. We asked if this was a direct line and she said nope, all she had to give us was the general voice mail. We asked directly for the extension and name, all of which was refused.

[UPDATE] I searched on the internet for the management company and found the number but no direct line. We left several voicemails in different mailboxes. We just received a call back from Peggy, but it took the management company 17 days to return our call. Peggy did not apologize, she stated that it's normally not how business is conducted. We spoke for 15 minutes, not a single apology.

I apologize for the length of this review but if you're considering moving here, please do take our experience into situation. We got the run around on several occasions, were delayed so they could have lunch, spent a lot of time in transit for information we couldn't fax or email and previously asked if we needed it earlier. It was a nightmare experience, but we found out early not to move into this complex. You get what you pay for.
