It's a renter's market. Keep looking.

Years at this apartment: 2000 - 2003

The other day (May 2005) I stopped by the old place to see how it was holding up. Not surprisingly, two of the four doors were wide open, so that anyone and their mother could just stroll on in. When I lived there, the doors were always broken and open. Every time I've been back, the doors have been broken and open. I sense a pattern here...

First, the good. The apartment was okay. I liked the layout, and there was plenty of storage space. The exercise room is generally clean and functional. The rent wasn't too bad for the size of the space. Parking is free.

Then, the bad:

The walls are pretty thin, so you play the neighbor lottery. I had good neighbors in my 2 years. I also had a kid who stomped on the floor above me (at midnight, no less), a guy who played the same song 12 times in a row, and a couple who watched loud TV at 2 AM. All balconies overlook the parking lot, and there's always someone blasting music from a car stereo- and not blasting while driving through the lot, but blasting while sitting in the car, parked in a spot, going nowhere.

Funny thing. Whenever the elevator was broken (happened a lot), you would take the stairs, and you would immediately remember why you never liked the stairs- they reek of all flavors of smoke. Then the elevator would be fixed, and while riding it you would remember why you never liked the elevator- it also reeked of... something.

There's trash everywhere. Some residents were too lazy to take their trash out, so they would just dump it in the laundry room on the first floor. Sometimes you could find a half-eaten sandwich lying in the hallway, or in the elevator.

Despite the food lying around, I never saw roaches or ants. Bedbugs were a problem, though.

There's a pool, and although it can get dirty, it's usually dirty with dead bugs and leaves (as opposed to DIRTY dirty).

Around 2001 the management installed this trench thing in the parking lot to help reduce flooding. In the winter, when it gets icy, cars tend to get their wheels into this trench and get stuck there. Joy.

There are plenty of problem places in Denver, and compared to those hellholes, Cherry Creek Place is okay. But you can find better apartments for the same price all over town.
