Pay for amenities & location

Years at this apartment: 2001 - 2006
I have lived at Country Club Towers and Gardens for five years. I spent one year in the gardens and then moved to the tower (there is only one). The garden apartments are great if you want a vintage look and hardwood floors. That being said, it's way too expensive not to have a dishwasher, garbage disposal, or to be able to control your own heat. It got turned on sometime in October and was shut off in May. The gardens are also very noisy if you are not on the top floor because of the hardwood floors. I can only imagine how loud it is now with all of the dogs that they allow (it wasn't that way before).
As for the tower, it depends on what you are looking for. If you amenities are more important to you than the space where you live, this might be the place for you, although, I've seen better amenities elsewhere for the same or lower price. The business center has one computer and it is almost ALWAYS in use. The fax in the business center in very unreliable. There is one washer and one dryer on each floor and depending on which floor you live on, it's next to impossible to use one - even if you go up or down a floor. The fitness center is fair. They have 1 recumbent bike, 1 electric regular bike, 3 treadmills, 2-3 ellipticals, and 2-3 stairmasters in addition to free weights and a circuit training machine. They have cookies at the front desk, but the later in the day it is, the less likely they are to have them. They also keep dog treats at the front desk. What about the cats'''
As for the apartments themselves, they are way too expensive for what they are. 1 bedrooms in the tower are about 650 square feet and "market" price right now is a little over $1,000 for the 7th floor. That is INSANE. You are paying for the location - Washington Park is 4 blocks south and 2 1/2 blocks east. I am moving after 5 years to a place that has just as many property amenities in addition to having more square footage, a gas fireplace, AND a washer and dryer in my unit for $100 less a month. Country Club was going to raise my rent $50 after 5 years. For what, I don't know because my apartment hasn't been upgraded (new appliances, kitchen & bathroom cabinets). A few months ago all tenants were informed that they had to pay a water charge. I pay $10/month. I know that I'm not paying for water that I use! Am I paying for people doing laundry' Am I paying for the water for the gardens' Am I paying for the "free" car wash'
So, if you want a mostly younger crowd, don't mind A LOT of dogs (I love dogs, just not that many), don't mind living diagonally across the street from a bar/restaurant, then maybe this is for you.
I will say that the staff is very polite and nice. Parking is not a problem if you pay for an off-street space, but a nightmare if you don't. The windows in the gardens are thin, noisy, and not very insulating. The same can be said for the tower. If you are going to rent in the tower, I would do the 10th floor or above if you're renting on the south or southwest side. The north or northeast side is best for less noise.
