Total Ripoff...

Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2008
I lived here on a nine month lease and it was ridiculous. First, they told me rent was $545, but when I went to sign the lease it jumped to $565, not a huge difference but I should have stopped right there. Next, they originally told me pets were allowed with a deposit and pet rent, then they changed their minds. I saw other tenants with dogs and cats on property.
Inside my apartment, the heat worked maybe 2 nights the entire time I lived there. The air conditioner barely worked and I couldn't get good air circulation in the bedroom, so I was forced to sleep in the living room during the summer. The water constantly cut out, which management blamed on people washing greasy dishes.
The laundry machines were tiny and expensive for the size, so when I did laundry I went to a laundromat or to my parents.
The elevator was almost always broke down, sometimes for weeks at a time, and the stairs and parking lot were icy. I slipped and fractured my wrist, which the management refused to accept any responsibility for.
Only one burner on my stove worked and the electric went out if I used anything too long.
Most of the tenants were friendly, but there were some who were very rude. One person would play music so loud, I heard him living 4 apartments away. Another lady seemed to hate all non-Christians and would chase me down trying to convert me. There were several occasions that I couldn't find a place to park because some people were having parties where their friends took up all the available spaces.
The management was rude and took forever to do even a tiny repair. I locked myself out once when my purse was stolen with my keys inside and I didn't have the $50 to give the guy for opening my door with the spare key. They posted harassing messages on my door every morning until I was able to pay it.
I didn't feel very safe. Cops and ambulances seemed to show up every day. I heard people screaming at each other almost every night, I could smell drugs from several rooms, and there was an explosion of some sort across the street. The security constantly got on my case if I was in my car and didn't immediately turn my lights on or if I was trying to clean up my car and took more than 5 minutes.
When I was able to move out, my dad accidently broke the neighbors window, which probably was worth no more than $50. The manager said we didn't need to worry about it. One month later, we were getting calls from collection agencies to pay them $200 for the window and "other expenses". We asked what these expenses were and they couldn't explain. They made no attempt to contact me before calling collections, and they also took my entire deposit with no explanation.
I regret not getting lawyers involved, especially while living there.
