This building is almost 100 years old... keep that in mind before moving in. The radiator heaters are probably the worst feature in the apartments. Loud, clanging noise almost every night in the winter. Some of the places have creaky wooden floors, some don't.

It's a great location if you want to live close to downtown, but not actually in it. If you want to navigate the neighborhood by foot, you will get pestered by a homeless person every now and then. I saw two people crouching next to the front steps smoking crack once, in broad daylight. I also had my car stolen once, when I was parked on Pennsylvania, across from McDonald's. Other than that, I've had no issues with personal safety.

I have to say the absolute worst thing about this place is probably it's selling feature - the courtyard. It's very small, everyone can see and hear everything you're doing down there if they want to. At night, it gets really bad. Everyone who has a door or balcony on the courtyard just loves to hang out past the start of quiet time and chit chat. They never seemed to realize that their voices are amplified within those walls, preventing anyone who is trying to sleep from doing so. Because this apartment also attracts a lot of recent college graduates, this happens often, and sometimes it's pretty obvious they've just come back from the bar, after 2:00 a.m. I've also caught bad, retalitory attitude from everyone I have asked, very politely, to please be quiet at night. Unfortunately, a lot of your neighbors will still think they're in the dorms on campus.

I have also had my laundry messed with a couple times, which I thinks stems from the noise incidents mentioned above. So you see, you won't be amongst the most mature, professional folks at this place.

Frank was an excellent manager; I believe the Hawthorn is now under new management. D/k anything about them.
