sherman tower is a total dump

from the minute i signed the lease, i felt nervous & uneasy. the first thing that i had to read and sign was a disclaimer stating that i understood that i could die of both lead poisoning and cancer from drinking the tap water! i thought, "well, that's probably understandable, considering how old the building is. i'll just drink bottled water instead." i didn't want to give up the great location i was in; i was going to school and working part-time just a few blocks down the street. After a few months, it really started to sink in - i was living in an overpriced, college frat party crap-hole with quite possibly some of the snobbiest management to ever exist. the leasing consultant was a total nightmare and whatever the male manager's name was ... he was completely stuck-up. there was one instance where, at probably one o'clock in the morning, i woke up to the overwhelming smell of GAS in my studio. as you can probably imagine, it scared me to death. luckily my boyfriend was also renting a studio upstairs (by the way, his apartment was a complete DUMP. i couldn't believe that sherman tower would even rent out something as junky as that), so i stayed with him overnight ... but, for christ's sake, it's frightening to even THINK about how easily i could have asphyxiated and DIED. the next morning, i went downstairs to report my need for maintenance and was treated like an idiot. "oh, when you leave your window open, the pilot light in your oven goes out." how the heck was i supposed to know that''' and no one in the right mind would sit and bake in one of those tiny little studios with their windows closed. no chance in hell! plus, shouldn't they have been more worried about my safety than the stupid oven' the next MAJOR problem that i had was with my toilet overflowing ... and it didn't just overflow ... it kept going and going and going and going. needless to say, my ENTIRE bathroom floor along with the carpeted area just outside of it was ankle-high with nasty, BLACK toilet water. this happened late at night and i was not aware (i had not been told by the management) that there was 24-hour emergency maintenance. of course, i tried to soak up the huge, disgusting mass of water, but i didn't have enough towels to even start to fix the problem. that was pretty aggrevating! anxiously i waited until morning to have it looked at, but the snobby guy downstairs was not exactly the most cheerful, helpful person. he basically tried to tell me that i would be held liable for all of the damage done, including any water damage done to the other apartments around and beneath mine. luckily, i really had NOT been told what to do in a circumstance like that, so i wasn't charged.
Honestly, i can NEVER recommend this place to anyone. the parking situation is ridiculous, unless you're willing to cough up about $90/month to park in their tiny parking garage. the community, in general, just sucks. It's almost a guarantee that your hallway will either smell like weed or old trash (the trashrooms are just outside your apartment door. it's sickening!) If you enjoy hearing your neighbors having sex every friggin' day, then move there. If you want to waste your money on a retro, non-competitive living space, then be my guest. If you like having the feeling that you've terribly inconvenienced the management staff just by walking into their office, then go for it. I would just suggest being a bit more careful. This building is a total waste of your time and money.
