It really depends on the building you live in. I lived on the corner of 20th and Penn. My place was right above the Horseshoe bar, so you can imagine the LOUD annoying noises in the middle of the night. But, that's part of living in an apartment downtown.

The apt and facilities were clean and nice. Parking, however, was a total nightmare. There are no reserved spots, and obviously way less spots than apartments. If you're getting home past 5pm, give up all hope of parking in the secure garage (or anywhere nearby) unless you don't mind hiking up 7 flights of stairs to the rooftop the next day. Awesome.

Walking from the garage to my apt, or even just checking my mail, I was also often approached by homeless folks who hang out at the park across the street, some less friendly than others. One even walked off with some boxes I was unloading from my car. The "gated community" did not include an attached parking garage for all the buildings, and the doors were often unlocked anyway. Also there are no personal padlocks on the doors (even bolts for when you are at home), and no option to put them in.

The staff was friendly enough, nothing special. When it came to moving out though, they dragged their feet as much as possible, even "losing" my Intent to Move paper for a few weeks. Could be an honest mistake. If I do not receive my security deposit I will be sure to write on here again with contempt, since I am a very clean person.

I did not see a SINGLE bug the entire time I lived there (a year). Not even a spider. Minor drips in faucets and other small details, but had no problems whatsoever with the friendly maintenance staff, who always arrived within an hour of my non-urgent requests.

It is pricey, but a lot less than many places. The two main reasons I moved in were for the secure parking and for safety -- both of which I feel were disappointed. However, I think for others it might be just fine.

In all, I think Uptown Square is a great place to live if you don't mind hiking to your car every day and you are NOT handicapped in any way (my building is not exactly OSHA certified).

If your experience is anything like mine, they will try to screw you out of your deposit. In fact, I not only was charged my entire deposit, but I got a BILL from them to replace the carpet! The carpet had typical wear and tear, but there wasn't any "pet damage," as they claimed, because I did not have a pet! On the up side, I fought it, insisting that they send me pictures of the alleged "damage" and they backed down. He said that they would send the pictures that they'd supposedly taken, but obviously it was a bluff. I got a revised statement a couple weeks later, with the charge taken off. I recommend that anybody, in any apartment complex that tries this, to demand to see photos of any damage they claim you caused! Regarding the rest of the review... The homeless people mentioned, from the park across 20th, never once were seen by me past about a third of the way down the block. I lived in the middle of the block, between 19th and 20th, and had no troubles whatsoever with that, so I'd say you can avoid most or all of this issue by not living close to 20th. The parking situation is every bit as bad as described, and in fact parking on the rooftop level is flat dangerous. There have been multiple break-ins and other crimes up there in the past couple of years. "Pricey" is an understatement, especially since Equity bought the place from Post. Great walk-through visual appeal, if you're seeing the place for the first time, but not remotely worth it when you factor in all the headaches.
