Not worth the cheap rent!

I moved into the Uptown Village apartments May of '06 and have not enjoyed it one day I have been there. Yes the staff and maintance has been really responsive and pretty nice, but it hasn't made a difference - in a word, the place sucks.

Access: Unless you are willing to shell out $150/month, you will have to park on the street and you will HAVE to park FAR away. This may not seem that inconvenient, but imagine carrying anything to your car, especially in winter. The elevators are VERY slow and both are operations only about 50% of the time. Card access is annoying if you are carrying anything at all.

Location: It's pretty good and not too loud. The apartments themselves keep sounds out, and you're in a cool part of town.

Apartments: Really hard to keep cool in the summer, really hard to keep warm in the winter. You will spend A LOT of money on heating and you will still be either cold as ice or hot as heck. There's no inbetween! All the fixtures and appliances are REALLY old and don't work very well. The sinks in my unit are gross. The carpet smells aweful and everything feels very dirty. The bathroom especially was a mess when I moved in. I ccan smell a lot of smoke from my neighbors.

Neighbors: People are VERY VERY weird here. Not nice at all, sometimes crazy. My next-door neighbor called the police 3 times to report stolen items - I know because they asked me each time to give them a statement. Public property is not respected, and there is a general unfriendliness that prevails, with a few exceptions.

Public Places: Cheap and needing repair. They were build in the '80's and haven't been updated since. Everything smells pretty bad and the pool and hot-tub areas feel unclean.

Overall the worst part is not being able to have anybody over because there is NO (and I repeat) NO place for them to park. Not 2 hour parking is generally availible. The place feels cold and lonely and is populated by people who don't seem to have it together. Think hard before you rent here!

I find your complaints about parking to be kinda weird, since this will be the same anywhere in the urbanized downtown area. This is Downtown Denver, not Highlands Ranch! (However, $150 is pretty steep for this corner of downtown, yipes! My parking here in Uptown Village is only $80/mo! I think they frequently change the parking rates for new tenants, unfortunately.) I never have any problems with friends coming over, since they're all downtown experts and can usually find a spot on the road within a block or two. One of my friends actually parks near my apartment when he's headed to LoDo, since competition for spots isn't as tough here.

I'm not sure what your complaint about key cards is. Most modern-ish apartments around downtown have a key-card system. If your hands are full, surely you'd have the same problem with an old-fashioned metal key. Besides, if you're willing to twist around a bit, you can use the key-card without even taking your wallet out of your pocket. :)

Your comment about elevator availability is somewhat accurate. People moving in and out frequently reserve one of the two elevators for moving purposes. The management puts the freight elevator into "freight mode" for the move, and they don't always do a good job of remembering to return the elevator to normal operation in a timely fashion.

My electric bill is very reasonable compared to a lot of my friends' bills. If you think that heating/cooling here is high, you should check out some of the 50-100 year-old buildings/houses around here!

I don't mean to sound like an Uptown Village fanboy. The management folks here aren't angels. But I don't know anywhere else around downtown that's better.

Parking is 80 dollars a month, not 150. Parking on the streets here for guests is far easier than downtown, and it is completely free for the entire weekend (Friday after 6:00 until Monday morning). I've never had any problems with any of the neighborhood people and I've lived there for three years (maybe the reviewer is scared of the --- bar across the street, I don't know). I didn't have to turn on my heater all winter this year. I live on one of the upper floors, so I'm sure that helps, but in the summer I had no problem keeping the place cool. Everybody I know here has it together. This reviewer just seems like an unhappy person in general. I would highly recommend Uptown Village as long as you don't mind living in a place where most of the residents are in their mid to late twenties. It is a really fun place to live.
