Not really worth the price

Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2005
I lived at Alexan City Center for one year, and for the winter months I loved it! Some positives: Very convenient location. Wal-mart, a liquor store, q-doba and Bally fitness are all within walking distance. It was only a short cab or light rail ride home from downtown bars and clubs on weekends. The fitness center was clean and didn't have any creepy wierdos just hanging out. It was also suprsingly very quite. My apartment was in phase one and faced in towards the parking lot, so that may have helped. I also loved the open floor plan and the huge walk in closet and enormous bathroom! Maintenace was timely and fixed things the first time as requested. All of my neighbors that i met were totally nice, very cool people. Some of the negatives: The air-conditioning units were directly over my aparment, I didn't discover this until it started to get warm outside as I'd moved in during the fall. Whenever someone turned down the thermostat in thier aparment, a loud, low noise from the roof was very obvious in my bedroom, but I learned to tune it out pretty quickly. OMG, the fire alarms! seriously, they went off no less than three times while I lived there. Each time it was some kid pulling it. Talking to other residents outside, this seems to have been a fairly common occurence. But at least it only happened when it was warm outside at night. What a pain.
Now for my biggest complaint. And what soured my experience with Alexan. I ran into some financial trouble my last few months living there. (partly because my rent was so expensive, but hey, I'll admit that is my fault) I paid my rent late, and the office tacked on all of thier extra fees. I paid what I had been told was the total amount needed and thought that was that. I came home a the following Friday to discover a very intimidating and threatening letter on my door! I called the office to try to straighten things out, but the manager was gone for the weekend, and the girl on duty had no information other than no payments for rent were posted to my account. The following day (Saturday), an envelope with my rent and and a letter accompanying it was slid under my door. The letter said that the amount I paid was not the full amount due and they do not accept partial payments so they were returning it to me. I had three problems with this: 1. I paid what I thought was the full amount as told to me by the representative in the office. 2. It took them 5 days to return my rent to me and inform me it was not enough, during which time they left a letter threatening legal action on my door. 3. The letter was left on my door on Friday, so I had no recourse of action until the following Monday. What a stressful weekend that was!
Of course, I ended up talking to the manager, and paying the full amount due, but she told me that I now had to pay additional "legal" fees on top of the late rent. Way to really kick someone when they're down, who was trying to work with you.
Overall, I felt that this was a very shady way to run a business, and I will not live in one of Trammel Crowe's communities again. It's too bad because I really liked the place, just the manager's shady business practices that ruined it for me.
