I previously lived in Greenwood Point, ( broadway/bellview ). My work put me here temporarily and now that my 6 months there is up I'm looking for a new place, and like the look of Alexan.

The reviews for Greenwood point are shockers. But in reality, it wasn't that bad a place. The rent was very cheap, and for the price, the 1 bed apartment was quite nice. It was quiet, well maintained, I had no problems with maintenance or management. Yet the reviews spoke otherwise.

Now, Alexan which isn't cheap, has shocking reviews as well. Can someone please be honest about the place before I move in''

The reviews on this site tend to be very biased towards people who have had a bad experience with their apartment. (Except for the glowing reviews that sound like brochures, those are posted by landlords.) This is partly because people with a bad experience are more motivated to post, and partly because apartment living in general has gone downhill in recent years. It seems like landlords and builders today don't even care if tenants renew their lease -- as long as the tenants sign the first lease and find out later that the walls are cardboard and the management is poor, the landlord can squeeze 9-12 months of rent out of them before they bolt. That said, this site is still the best resource for apartment hunters. You just have to read reviews with a grain of salt and think about the motivations of the poster. I lived at Alexan City Center for a few months back in 2003, and I found it to be excellent. I thought it was a bit overpriced, though, and eventually decided that if I was going to be paying downtown prices for an apartment, I might as well be living downtown. However, Alexan City Center was sold to another landlord just before I moved out, and it's quite common for new management to try to milk properties by skimping on service and compensating by hiring smoother talking salespeople. So, while I had a good experience at Alexan, you probably want to listen to someone who's lived there more recently. Good luck with your apartment hunting.

The best thing to do when reviewing a comment site such as this is to look for common themes among those posting. If everyone is saying the same thing, there must be SOME degree of truth to it (management, fire alarms, etc). I would gather that information and ask the leasing office to address those concerns for you before signing a lease.

My husband and I recently toured the Alexan and put down a deposit. We also have a friend who's lived at the Alexan for three years, and have not heard any complaints from him. Another friend lived there when they first opened and he said his only complaint was the price. I see a recurring theme in some of the comments posted here. People complain about being charged for paying rent late. Guess what? Any management company would do that. Alexan now has a website for residents to pay rent, so you can mkae sure the check was received too. Someone commented about management mailing bills to residents in their own complex, which seems like an absurd thing to point out. Think about how much an employee is paid per hour to walk from unit to unit vs. the cost of a postage stamp. I'd do the same myself. It's better to keep employees in the office where they belong (helping residents) than having them absent. Two people mentioned the parking garage being re-painted to tow abandoned cars. I would THANK management for doing so. I make every effort to ensure my vehicle is not an in-operable "junker". I expect my fellow residents to do the same. Abandoned vehicles make it harder for the rest of us to find parking spaces. I've seen the security gate broken at other high-end communities, so what's new? I've heard of cars being stolen at just about every apartment complex in town, no matter how much the rent is. I think it's just a sad fact of apartment living. We are currently living at the Village at Loretto Height, which is a hell hole. My husband and I can't wait to move over to the Alexan.

Seriously. The only reason that they get people to live at Alexan is the fact that its close to light rail. I personally have lived here for 3 months and this is the worst place I have ever lived out. I'm counting the time when I was in college and my bedroom window was next to a dumpster. Seriously. This place is a dump. From getting your name in the access system for visitors to having a simple ice maker fixed takes a good 2 months. I have lived here 3 months and call them every monday to remind them that I'm waiting for my name to start showing in the access system. 28% rating overall is not that far stretch from the truth.

While there's some truth to the comments indicating unhappy people are more likely to post comments, a 28% recommendation rate is pretty bad for a relatively new complex. Compare it to some other comprable properties and you'll see a difference. Also, don't let the management company change fool you. The "new owners" are the same folks. Check out Trammel Crowe's web site if you doubt me. To the people who left the 8/1/07 response--you've got rose tinted glasses on and are ignoring several of the recurring themes (particularly those dealing with maintenance). I've lived here over 2 years and lease renewal comes up soon--I'm definitely reviewing my options! And yes, it is appropriate to charge late fees when rent is late. I've been a renter for almost 30 years. Alexan's late fees do verge on usurious. I pay my rent on time every month; but if I ever had a financial emergency and had to pay late, I know I could count on either being on the street or in the poor house.
