1st impression, not bad, but not great

Years at this apartment: 2008 - 2008
This is a new complex (still under construction in some parts) and to be fair, I am not a resident, but did take an extensive tour of the property. I would say that this complex is a "slight" upgrade from your standard, generic apartment but is certainly not on the level of the higher-end, downtown lofts. For example, the kitchen cabinets are basic particle board but instead of the generic white or tan veneer, they use a faux (i.e. plastic) cherry wood veneer. The same goes for the counter-tops, instead of the generic white or tan veneer covers, they use a faux (very cheap looking) stone looking veneer. But, despite those cosmetic upgrades, the materials still come off as cheap. (Note, the 4th/top floor apartments do use real granite for the counter-tops, but that is the only difference).
The floors are mostly carpeted, except in the kitchen and bathroom. The kitchen has a fuax wood floor (but it is rather nice) and the light fixtures are actually nice and are a real upgrade over a generic apartment. Appliances are adequate (black in color). The appliances are not high or mid end units, but since this is a new place, the appliances are a significant upgrade from any apartment that is 3 years or older. Some units have a Washer/Dryer in unit (and you have to pay additional rent for that) but all units have hook-ups. And as usual, they are unwilling to move a W/D out of unit if you do not want W/D
But, there are many different and unique layouts. And to be fair, the apartments are relatively spacious for the price. (i.e. 1200 sq-ft for 2bd/2ba are available)
Parking is via a centralized, multi-level garage. The big drawback is, if your unit is far from the garage, you have quite a hike to go from your car to your unit (as much as 100 yards).
Hallways. The complex is laid out in a semi "U" shape with one central, wide hallway connecting all units. This hallway will most likely be the source of many noise complaints. God forbid you live near a unit with children or any sort of rowdy individuals, even quaint sounds will echo through this hallway. Also, while on a tour of one of the units, the unit above was doing their laundry; I know that because you can hear the water draining down the wall of your unit. This fact indicates that insulation is insufficient and that inter-unit noise will be a problem.
One annoying thing, in the bathroom, the light and exhaust fan are on the same switch, and the exhaust fan is ungodly loud. If you live with someone else, be prepared to be awoken if that person uses the bathroom in the middle of the night. The rep did say they actually have had requests to have the fan disconnected. Thus, it makes you wonder, with the lack of insulation, poorly thought out electrical, where else might corners have been cut.
The hallway is tastefully decorated. But there are no "grounds" to speak of. There is a central pool and the clubhouse is large with some nice touches (free Starbucks coffee maker), gym, meeting rooms, lounge, etc. The location is very well situated, walking distance to the Belmar shopping center and close access to 6th ave.
All in all, for the amount of rent charged, I have a hard time recommending this place. There are just too many little annoyances, cheap materials, and inconveniences. If you decide to rent here, I would not do so on a 12 month lease and see how it goes. Based on what I saw, rent should probably be chopped about $100-$200 per month across the board.
