moving out a nightmare

Don't believe for a second you'll get your damage deposit back even if you leave the place spotless.
Before you move out, be clear what you will be charged for cleaning and painting. We were told at lease signing that we wouldn't be charged any painting fees if it needed. Surprise! $100 for touch-up paint in a 1bdrm that did not need touching up. They just charged us without looking at the apt--we know this because we were charged $125 (the 2 bdrm rate) for our 1bdrm. Hm. They are clearly out to get every penny.
Also when you do the move out walkthru, make sure it's with someone useful. We did ours with a leasing agent which was pointless, she said "everything looks great, you won't be dinged for anything". The complex manager did a 2nd walkthru without us, and nickeled and dimed us for cleaning various items. She's the one you want the walk out appt with.
Overall, we liked living there, but move out was a complete hassle.
