Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2009
We are at the end of a two year lease at AMLI and ready to move out! The people who worked in the office are all very snotty and stuck up. They are unresponsive to your needs and the male member of the staff argues with you when you call with an issue... a "that isnt that important" attitude.
The apartments themselves were nothing really special. The fixtures were generally cheap and there were tons of cracks along the walls and above windows from the foundation shifting. Since the complex isn't too old, I would worry that as time goes on, the apartments will become unstable. We had quite a few problems(leaks above the windows when it rained, a leak in the closet (which took a few months to fix) birds in the air vents, broken toilets, bad garbage disposal, broken sinks, etc) while we where there-definitely more than your average 2 year stay at a new complex. Maintenance did come fairly quickly and took care of the problems we had. On a positive note-the apartments do come with a washer and dryer installed and have really good closets and storage space.
The grounds are kept fairly clean, although not everyone is as conscientious about cleaning up after their pets. They are terrible with clearing snow and the place is dangerous to walk around after it snows-even weeks after if it hasn't melted. They are also not very receptive to clearing the snow if you complain. There are areas around the complex that aren't very well lit, but the area is generally safe. We did know of a few cars that were broken into while we where there and one of our neighbors apartment was broken into during the day.
Parking is a very poor situation if you live farther from the complex's office. They have carports up everywhere-which you have to pay extra for-and which take up all the space for regular spots. Where we lived, there were only about 5-10 regular spaces for about 20 apartments. If you come home after 9pm, expect a long walk in the dark from your car.
We have had several breakins lately. Crime is up in this complex.
The garbage "valet" is a total nightmare. If you are like most people and create trash on the weekends, you have to walk your trash to the one trash compactor on the grounds and stack it outside of the locked compactor-along with dozens of other stinking bags-where it will wait until Monday morning to get put in the compactor. We saw a bunch of animals digging through the trash in the evenings and it was a general eye-sore. We lived fairly far from the trash, but if you lived closer, I know it smelled during the summer.
Also, although we were fined for leaving our trash out at 845 am (you are supposed to be able to leave it out until 9am), many people left theirs out every night at around 8pm and it just sat there on the curbs until the next morning. They absolutely poke through your trash to try and find out who it belongs to. I bought a shredder for the first time while living at my complex. You don't know who is going through your trash, a very unsettling feeling. If they catch you twice, they fine you $50. This is told to you when you move in and is fine, but if they go by your apartment at 8:40, you put trash out at 8:45 and they find it at 10:00, you can be fined for it. If they're going to punish you, they need to be sure that they don't collect the trash until 9AM to avoid overlap.
