The Summit & Birch Hill

Years at this apartment: 1997 - 1999

I rented at the Summit complex. The complex grounds are nicely kept and the apartments are garden style. My apartment was advertised as recently refurbished, however, I had a 1960ish stove that you would never want to cook in. When I asked for a new one, my reqest was denied. The apartments also come with a garage, which is great for the hard winters...if you can get to your garage. You see, the Summit Apartments are at the top of a very large and steep hill which is never plowed in time for entering or leaving your garage. The potholes in the driveway do provide traction however, enabling you to get up the driveway after several tries.

As with all apartments, you can hear your neighbors, smell their cooking, and witness their behaviors. Smoking is a big issue. Families don't want to smoke in their apartment so they often smoke outside, sometimes by your window, choking you to death. And yes, they leave their butts everywhere. If you walk with shoes on, your neighbor below will be screaming at you for making excessive noise, however if you flush your toilet while they shower, a good scalding makes you even.

The view from my apartment was breathtaking. You can see hanggliders and almost touch airplanes as they fly by.

Management is non-responsive to your complaints as is the so called 24 hour maintenance crew. In fact, they will target you as the "trouble maker/complainer" if you complain legitmately about something that is wrong. As example: heat is included in the rent. The furnace broke for two days and we were without heat. Management said, "plug a heater in." Of course, electricity is at my expense. The same thing happened when the water pipes (an outside main) broke. We were without water for 24 hours. There was no reduction in rent although most of us had to leave the building for a day or so. When I asked for security lighting outside my dark building, they installed the lights and gave me a letter stating that my lease would not be renewed. My rent was always paid on time, I just cost them too much money. When I question my renewal and lack of it, I was sent an eviction notice via the sheriff.

The only theft I am aware of was that of my neighbor; her car stolen out of the garage.

Birch Hill apartments do not have dishwashers. Stange, in this day and age. A swimming pool on the complex has been filled in...too much money for them to keep up. It is now an observation deck. I wonder why you would need that considering that the apartments come with decks and patio's.

I have since moved out, however, I fondly refer to the Summit as the "Slummit."
