Avoid!
From: -Anonymous-Date posted: 6/16/2009
Years at this apartment: 2008 - 2009
Pros:
-convenient location close to everything
Cons:
-over-priced ($1300 for a 400sf studio' Highway robbery!)
-noisy: walls are shoddily-constructed and do almost nothing to block sound, which sucks if your neighbors make a lot of noise, drag furniture around, and have yappy little dogs that never shut up. And/or if your apartment happens to be facing the back, you can look forward to being woken up each morning by the crash of dumpsters being emptied. If you value your sleep, skip this place!
-security is non-existent: apart from a front door that requires a joke of a code to unlock, there is no security--no cameras, no guards, nothing. The BACK door is always unlocked, so if someone wanted to get in they could do so easily and unobserved. Or through the garage, which is left open half the time. Although the police show up at the buildings often enough that it almost seems like there's extra security, lol. And if you park your car in the garage, aside from the crap dropping onto it every time its rains, don't expect to find out who inevitably damages your parked vehicle. And if you're trying to get into your parking space, hope that that the local grease-monkey gear-heads aren't blocking your space as they work on their small------ muscle cars. Oh, and if you want a garage-door opener so you don't have to get out of your car every time you want in or out to use your key, expect to pay $120/YEAR for the "privilege" of renting a remote. Scammers.
-the construction is 40 years old, and shoddy. Everything is rusting and decaying (and looks like it is). Vermin wiggle in through any available crack. Plumbing backs up and seeps down through your ceiling from the apartment above, or the wiring in your apartment is screwy and you blow fuses until you can figure out what not to plug in where, or your kitchen sink insists on spewing hot water out of both taps for at least a minute until one finally turns cold.
-The laundry room is a bad joke. The machines are out of order half the time. After a year from being told they were going to be replaced (and additional ones installed) they never were. They can't even get the service company to come fix/replace them anymore due to some bizarre contract situation. When the machines are working expect to lose money every couple of months due to their coin slots jamming. And expect your clothes to come out of the dryers smelling like DOG because idiots insist on drying their filthy dog blankets in them. And washers/dryers are not allowed in the units, so either you have to put up with the malfunctioning equipment or else hoof it to a laundromat.
-some folks there are okay. Some aren't. Like the lady with the two terriers who insists on leaving her dogs' droppings in the mailroom recycle bin because she's too lazy to dispose of it properly. There are any number of intriguing smells floating through the hallways at any given time... Or the people who have long drawn-out conversations right outside your door. Or let their kids go screaming through the halls. Or flick cigarette butts off of their balconies onto yours. And yes, some of these people are definitely on the welfare, having no discernible full-time occupations other than driving you mad. One call to immigration could probably clear out a quarter of the tenants right quick.
-The office staff try to be helpful, but one wonders whether they actually do anything half the time or just put on a show for you so you'll leave them alone. One gets the impression that they are in deep denial about just how bad of a hellhole they are managing. The maintenance staff are helpful, but seem to be barely able to keep up with their workload. It's not difficult to understand why any of them seem less than thrilled to be working there.
-the up-front security is another scam, and so is the lease. They charge more per month if you go month-to-month, so you'll feel inclined to get a yearly lease. Except that if you make the mistake of renewing (ha ha, let alone renting there in the first place!) and then realize that you've got to get out of there because you've taken all you can take, do NOT expect any leniency from the Housing Authority--they WILL keep your full 1 & 1/2 months' deposit, regardless of mitigating circumstances and a request for consideration.
If you're smart, you will avoid Greenwich Close apartments like the plague. You can find other places in town for similar prices but with more space and better amenities if you look hard enough. But this place should be condemned, razed to the ground and perhaps built anew (by someone who actually knows how to build decent housing!).
