Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2007
My wife and I have lived in a one-bedroom apartment at Hamden Ridge for nearly two years and have been very pleased. As graduate students whose lives are largely focused on New Haven, we wanted a quiet place where we didn't have to worry about anything. Hamden Ridge has been that place for us. The maintenance and office staffs have been responsive and very friendly, addressing all questions and problems quickly. Our apartment is spacious, has nice hardwood floors, a newly renovated bathroom, and an old though fully-functional kitchen. The cat has loved the deep windowsills overlooking the trees, bushes, and lawns--all full of birds and squirrels. With no traffic you can be in downtown New Haven in about 12 minutes (via two different routes), while during commuting hours you are looking at about a 17-22 minute drive, depending on your destination. Bus travel to downtown New Haven is a breeze (I've done it 5 days a week for two years). Just how great Hamden Ridge is has been emphasized for us as we look for a new apartment in another city--if only I could find a gas stove and hardwoods...
Positive points:
Excellent floor-plan--really, one of the best I've ever seen in an apartment complex
Bright, light-filled apartment
Quiet, suburban area, very close to all shopping/services imaginable (including 3 gyms)
Balcony (you can grill on it)
Great staff in both maintenance and the office
Lots of closet space, extra storage off balcony
Beautiful hardwood floors
Good water pressure, water is not hard or soft, tastes fine
Central air conditioning
Good value
Lawns, bushes, trees
Plenty of parking
All areas kept clear of snow in winter
Good mix of residents (students, young professionals, people with kids)
People here are friendly
Right on the busline--buses come very regularly (routes D and J)
Gas stove
Big pantry
Close to parks and outdoor activities (including mountain biking, hiking, etc.)
Negative points:
Kitchen is old (no big deal)
Oven temperature is way, way off (get an oven thermometer)
Air pump for the heating/cooling system is very loud (irritating, but you get used to it)
Windows are not super efficient (not a big deal since they pay for heat)
Limited kitchen cabinet/counter-top space (but it has a large pantry)
Laundry facilities are small (but close to laundromats)
