Noisy crappy apartment with a moody superintendent

Please believe me when I say this. Please, for your own good, don't choose to stay at this place. Firstly, its located right beside the Dixwell Avenue (Rt 10) which is a very busy thoroughfare and will drive you nuts with the regular noise of cars/trucks speeding at a healthy 40-50 mph and the frequent blare of emergency vehicles that can wake you up while you are trying to get some sleep after a tiring workday! I had to spend 2 years at this place and not a day has gone when I could get some decent sleep. This is particularly true of the apartments on the street side. The ones on the other side are better, but still don't live up to the standards when it comes to noise. Ultimately, I had to cover up my bedroom windows with multiple layers of thick paperboards (like you break up a packing box and put it up there) to act as a noise insulator, getting the room dark in the process.
Well, thats not all, the other horrifying source of noise is the old, rundown heating system. From September to around April, it makes such unbelievable noise that you will definitely sit up on your bed and wonder, "who the hell is hammering so hard at 2 am in the night''" When that happens, the building shakes violently and weird noises (probably from hot steam escaping suddenly) start oozing out... and you will be cursing your stars, as to why you signed that one year lease...!!! This phenomenon is also more apparent on the street side of the building (the plumbing networks must be on that side).
Apart from that, the superintendent, who is usually nice and would favor you if you drop in a $10 bill from time to time can be very moody and sometimes lodge needless complaints of your car being in the wrong spot and such. He is also in the habit of losing temper and would calm down only if you lose yours too.. but then he is a minion of the boss living cosily in North Haven and complains to him about you from often, if you are not in his good books.
There is hardly any parking space if you have two cars or if you have any guests. I also saw a couple of rats at times running around in the corridor. Then at the end of the lease, you will be charged something or the other, even if you leave the place spotlessly clean!
So, if you want to live in a noisy hellhole for a year, this is the deal for you guys! Else, choose something else... good luck on your apartment searching!
