I like it here

I'm also surprised by the bad reviews, I like it here. I'm a single woman who moved into a one-bedroom. I love my apartment. I'm on the third floor, surrounded by trees. For 3/4 year I don't even see the other apartments from my living room, study or kitchen. My cat loves being able to look out the windows and sees lots of bird and squirrel activity. For a while, the people across the alley from me also had a cat, and both of our cats would sit in the windows and stare at each other all day.
It is expensive, but renting is expensive, period. A friend of mine lives about 1/2 hour north of me in a rural setting and pays the same amount. My sister in Boston pays about 1/3 more for a similar-sized 1BR and she has to pay for her heat. I don't, and I can keep as warm as I like in the winter without worrying about the cost.
The grounds are well kept and pretty. The building exteriors are original Art Deco from the 1920s. The entire complex is on the National Register of Historic Places. Security is friendly and has bent over backwards to help me with a consistently noisy neighbor, who finally got the message and is much quieter. I wouldn't walk around Farmington Avenue at night, but I feel safe going from the parking lot to my building at night. The walkways, including the alleys, are well lit.
My immediate neighbors are a mix of undergrad and graduate students, working people, and little old ladies whose churches send vans every Sunday morning to pick them up. The neighborhood in general has a mix of people from different races, and I like living in a place where everybody doesn't look exactly like me.
Laundry is fine. I paid for the health club the first year but never used it, and they have not charged me for it after that nor asked for their key back. It can get noisy in the evenings if your windows are open, since we're between a fire house and St. Francis Hospital.
Clemens Place encompasses 40 buildings or so. It sounds like people have different experiences depending on where their building is situated. I feel like I live in a lovely neighborhood in an urban setting, and I like it.
