You're renting, what do you expect''

My fiance and I moved in in Feb. 2006, just after the new management company took over. We looked at a lot of different apartment complexes (including Lofts at the Mills before the new management) and my fiance really liked the exposed brick in the mills plus the fact that we got 1100 square feet for $850 a month was a huge bonus!! We had just graduated from college and were used to living in dorms. so it wasn't a huge change for us, except that people mostly like to keep to themselves rather than keep their front door open. Yes, you can hear your neighbors telephone ring; yes, you can hear your neighbors sneeze; yes, you can hear your neighbors nightly activities which can make for awkward meetings in the hallway. We went to WalMart, bought a floor fan and have been fine ever since. We have two cars that have never been touched, dinged, stolen or broken into (knock on wood). Now that the weather is nice, we walk every night around the area and have been greeted with nothing but friendly people who mind their own business. We had ants the first summer and I couldn't figure out why, being on the top floor. Then I realized my fiance didn't quite know how to wipe the crumbs off the counter after he fixed himself some food. Once we got that down, no more ants. If you have ants or cockroaches, clean your apartment!! This type of building is prone to bugs and critters since it is not insulated very well so do yourself a favor and keep your space clean and the critters will leave you alone. We have two huge windows that span the whole length of the apartment top to bottom. They are beautiful and add to the ambiance, but it's a pain to keep it warm in the winter and cool in the summer. In the winter it's not as bad because heat rises but it gets pretty bad in the summer and we have to crank the AC at night. We have two people and a cat in 1100 square feet. Average electric bill is about $60 a month and gas is about $45. Buy some curtains, put them up and it will help with the insulation.

Taragon Management... my only major complaint. The maintenance people are fine, we've only had to deal with them on a limited basis. The brand new dishwasher started to smoke so we called and they came to fix it the next day. I locked myself out early in the morning and a maintenance guy was able to let me in after checking my id etc... When we moved in, we were told every apartment was going to have it's own washer/dryer eventually (not true, only ones that are compatible but they can't tell you which ones those will be) and the windows were all being replaced (seems they don't have the money for that now). It took a year for them to put a washer/dryer in and they only did they because we refused to resign the lease otherwise and were in the office every day to bother them about it. The girl who showed us the property flat out lied to us to get us to sign the lease. She asked us what was most important to us and promised us the world. We'd never rented before and didn't know any better.

Overall, we're satisfied and plan on staying another year or so until we are ready to buy a house. The rent is very reasonable for the size apartment we have. The walls are thin but the rent is cheap so we'll deal with having a fan on all the time. Parking and safety has never been an issue. I would recommend getting anything in writing from the management staff. They don't seem to be informed very well so I guess it's not their fault but just be cautious. Lastly, we have no closet space. We have a big apartment and only two small closests. Every apartment is set up differently so don't assume that because the one they showed you had a lot of closests means your will! Ask to see yours before you sign the lease!!
