Don't move there

Years at this apartment: 2001 - 2002
The management of this establishment leaves a lot to be desired. In my 12 months of occupancy I talked to at least 4 tenants who had had their cars either stolen or broken into. There is no security and really poor lighting in the carparks although there was a huge floodlight right outside our bedroom window that took some getting used to.
The apartment has to be sprayed for insects twice a year and it means pulling everything out of all your cupboards in the kitchen and the bathroom for fear of being fined $50 or some such ridiculous amount. Other places I have lived didn't require this and upon talking to a friend who is a homeowner I have learnt that the reason they get us to pull everything out is because they use a very cheap insect spray that is toxic to humans. Bit of a worry.
We also got back from a week away and had a noise complaint in a note written from the manager. It was quite a condescending letter that automatically assumed that you were causing a huge public disturbance rather than just stating the fact that someone had made a complaint. I am not sure how it came about though as we have no stereo, rarely had visitors and were not often home, both of us being in demanding professions.
Another thing that was quite upsetting was a note from another tenant saying that he had lost his laptop computer. He had been ordered it online and when it was delivered it was signed for by the leasing office but
they had failed to take care of it and someone had stolen it from the office before the tenant had even recieved notice it had arrived. When he confronted the complex manager she refused to cooperate insisting that it was not her responsibility. Now I am sure that there must be some sort of insurance that would cover this and at the exorbitant rent (>920 2brm) they should have been able to help this poor tenant but he lost more than $2000 of computer due to the office staff's negligence.
And about the amount it costs to live there, that cost does not include ANY cleaning of the common hallways. The dormitory style arrangment forces tenants share a hallway that often has horrid smells due to poor ventilation and was not shampooed or at the very least vaccuumed in the entire year we lived there, needless to say it was filthy and remains filthy. The one gym room has one treadmill that broke down over 6 months ago as well as a slider machine that broke down sometime before that.
Now when we moved in we asked for a 12 month lease and signed it sometime in June of 2001, obviously asking for a 12 month lease and moving out more than 14 months after signing it we couldn't remember specific dates. We moved in on August 1 so we made sure we were out by August 1 the following year. We filled in an application to leave and gave more than 40 days notice but were never informed that we were leaving early even though it should be easy to cross-reference people's moveout dates with their leases. As it turns out we were presented with a 13 month lease ( who ever heard of a 13 month lease' ) and unwittingly signed it. This provides the complex with a month of paid rent while they can ready the apartment for the next tenant so they never have to take on the operating expense of having the apartment untenanted at any time. I have since talked to 3 other tenants who have made similar mistakes as I did ... be careful dealing with these people, they are tricksters. Now we have to pay for an extra months rent which is going to stop us eating for the next month.
Do not move there, do not, do not, do not. It is very poor value for money and these people do not let you feel comfortable enough to ever consider it anything but a very temporary residence, you will never call it home.
