Condemned Apts. For Rent at Esplanade

I agree with the author of Unfit... We (my wife and 2 yr old child) also have had major problems. Let?s start with the fact that when we came to look at their apartments we were shown a second floor with an attic. We advised the leasing agent (which Unfit author noticed is no longer with Esplanade) that we were going to rent it because the attic space was great and we told him we wanted to leave a deposit and if it would be a problem to have a pet as we were looking to buy a puppy for our daughters birthday. We were told everything was ok and we were ready to sign away. On our first day we called management because the attic was suppose to be clean when we moved in and it wasnt they tried to tell us that the attic wasnt part of our apt.! Yet we have full access from our hallway to it. Of course it took months after for them to finally clean it. A few months after we went to pay our rent in the office and show off our puppy! When we came back home later on that night there was a note slipped under our door (whatever happened to using our mailbox, us mail, or telling us to our face when we were in the office'). The note read we were required to pay an additional non refundable $500 pet fee! We were shocked and immediately pulled out our lease. Sure enough the apt was pet friendly but there was nothing on it about a pet fee! Then the worst part, our child got sick for 6 months, I mean constantly in and out of the hospital, xrays, bloodwork, the whole 9 yards to then determin she had lead poisoning! The Dr. called for a state inspector to come to our home. Needless to say, the lead inspector was appaled. The levels of lead throughout the home were toxic. A fire marshall also stated this was not a legal 2 family home, as there arent 2 exits in case of a fire. The state immediately sent them a warrant along with a letter CONDEMMING the apt. as it was not withing health and safety codes. They mandated that legal notices be put up on the entrance of the home advising the apt was condemned or risk paying fines. They chose to pay fines for each day! State law says once an apt is found to have lead we are not required to pay rent (check with an attorney if youd like). We are now in the process of a lawsuit as they are not providing us with a substitute apt, permanently or temporarily due to the state findings.
